Fencing Has Two Runner-Up Finishes at Penn State's Garret Open

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Two second-place finishes were the highlight for Temple fencing at another individual meet, the Penn State Garret Open on Saturday. Overall, the Owls had five finalists (top eight) in their second meet to open the season.
Meet Results
> Temple had two runners-up for a second week in a row, including one repeat second-place finisher in freshman Kari Weiner (foil).
> Weiner lost only twice through three rounds of five bouts to start the day before direct elimination. She advanced to the semifinals by a score of 15-13, and to the finals by a score of 15-7 before losing to Columbia's Sylvie Binder in the championship bout.
> Sophomore Kerry Plunkett earned a runner-up finish in sabre after tying for third at last week's Temple Open.
> Plunkett edged Penn State's Karen Chang 15-14 to advance to the semifinals, and beat another Nittany Lion, Sara Cunningham, by a score of 15-11 to make it to the championship bout.
> Sophomore Kennedy Lovelace tied for third in foil, as did senior Safa Ibrahim in epee.
> In sabre, freshman Eva Hinds was a finalist in her second of as many collegiate meets, taking sixth today.
Next Up
> Some Owls will compete at the November NAC in Kansas City, Mo., from Nov. 10-13, while the whole team returns to action Dec. 3 at Vassar's Tradition Meet, the first dual meet of the year for Temple.
