Seventh-Ranked Fencing Looks for its 22nd Straight NIWFA Title on Saturday

3.2.18 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - With its regular season completed, seventh-ranked Temple fencing now looks to the postseason. First up, the Owls (26-12) will go for their 22nd straight National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) team title at the conference's 90th annual championship meet on Saturday, March 3. West Point, N.Y. is the site of the annual meet, held on the campus of the U.S. Military Academy.

Meet History
> Temple head coach Dr. Nikki Franke led the Owls to a 21st consecutive team title at last year's NIWFA Championships, the 89th annual.
> The Owls also won trophies in foil and epee last year, as well as an individual foil title for Kennedy Lovelace.
> Lovelace's teammate, Auset Muhammad, was close behind and earned broze in foil last season. Ally Micek earned a runner-up finish in epee, while Fiona Fong took fourth place.
> In the team event, Temple placed first among a field of 17 teams. Stevens came in second, with Johns Hopkins placing third. The Owls won in foil ahead of second-place Stevens and third-place Smith, and also won in epee ahead of second-place Johns Hopkins and third-place FDU. JHU took the sabre title, with Temple placing second ahead of Stevens.

Scouting Temple
> The Owls finished the dual meet season at 26-12, most recently going 2-3 at their own Temple Invitational, including a win vs. #3 Penn State.
> Head coach Dr. Nikki Franke earned her 800th career win on Feb. 4 as the Owls went 8-2 over two days at the Northwestern Duals. Franke now stands at 807-242-1 in her 46th year with the program.
> Temple's wins leader this season was Lovelace with an impressive record of 61-22. Sophomore Malia Hee (sabre) finished close behind at 55-22, while freshman Eva Hinds (sabre) is right there at 54-20, as is sophomore Kerry Plunkett (sabre) at 53-19.
> Honored for Senior Day this past weekend was team captain and epee squad leader Safa Ibrahim, whose career record of 221-103 gives her the most wins all-time in program history. Ibrahim garnered seven more wins than the previous record-holder, foil's Debbie Currie ('98), and smashed the previous epee wins record of 193 set by Julia Korony ('02).

Next Up
> One week after the NIWFA Championships, the Owls will head to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Lafayette, and will be represented by the maximum 12 participants.
