Temple Mourns Passing of Men’s Basketball Great Marty Stahurski

PHILADELPHIA – Marty Stahurski, a two-time all-Philadelphia Big 5 selection for Temple men's basketball in the mid-70s, passed away Saturday morning. He was 61.
"All of Temple University is saddened by the passing of Marty Stahurski," said Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. "He was not only a tremendous basketball player at Temple, but a loving husband and father. Our thoughts and prayers are with is family at this time."
Mr. Stahurski, a two-year captain for the Owls, was a four-year starter for Temple from 1974-75 through 1977-78, ending his career with 1,499 points which was the fourth-highest total at the time of his graduation (17th currently). He averaged double figures in scoring all four seasons, with a high of 15.7 points during his senior season.
A two-time First Team all-Philadelphia Big 5 honoree, Mr. Stahurski, helped lead the 1977-78 Cherry and White to 24 wins, the third-highest total in school history at the time, and a berth in the 1978 National Invitation Tournament. During his two seasons as team captain, Temple won 41 games and lost 16.
Mr. Stahurski is survived by his wife, Renee, and four children, Michael, Chelsea, Nikki and Claudia. The family will hold a viewing Monday afternoon (2-4 p.m.) and evening (7-9 p.m.) at the Hungerford & Clark, Inc. Funeral Home, 110 Pine Street, Freeport, N.Y. A religious service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday evening at the home.
