Track and Field Makes Headway at Fastrack National Invitational

2.10.17 | Women's Track and Field

OCEAN BREEZE, N.Y. – Temple women's track and field competed at the Fastrack National Invitational on Friday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. The squad earned two top-three finishes and recorded two individual personal records in the mile run.

Senior Kenya Gaston notched a season best in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.31. Gaston took third overall out of the field of 44 participants.

"Kenya ran her best at this meet than she has all season," said head coach Elvis Forde. "She played a major role in the relay team and has been improving over the course of these past few weeks. I am excited to see her race among the high level of competition at the American Athletic Conference Championship in a  few weeks."

A 4 x 400 meter relay team of Gaston, Millie Howard, Crystal Jones, and Bionca St. Fleur took third, just behind Princeton, among the six teams. The A-team was able to run time under four minutes with a 3:54.64, besting each of the team's previous races of the 2016-2017 season.

"Our middle distance athletes are killing it right now," said Forde. "Katie, Grace, and Millie have been performing really well and I hope they remain healthy as we get closer to the conference meet and the outdoor season. Coach Snyder is good at what he does; he's doing a great job with our distance team and we are looking forward to seeing what else they can do this year."

In the mile run, sophomore Katie Leisher and freshman Grace Moore earned 15th and 17th places respectively. The distance duo each reached a personal best in the event just under the five-minute hump at 4:53.40 and 4:53.59.

"Katie has set a great example for Grace and Millie with her work ethic and improvement this season," said Forde. "The three of them have really been working hard. Katie and Grace's times in the mile were really impressive. In the women's race, the five minute mark is a huge barrier and it was fantastic to watch those two really get after it and surpass their bests."

Seniors St. Fleur and Jimmia McCluskey earned top-10 finishes in the long jump invite. St. Fleur hit a mark of 5.62m, landing her at fourth place. McCluskey's jump of 5.50m made sixth place overall.

"Our athletes are slowly but surely getting ready to compete at our conference championship. Over the next week or so, we are looking to evaluate this season's performances and determine who will make the conference team," said Forde.

Temple women's track and field will next compete at the Artie O'Connor College Invitational on Feb. 17.
