Men’s Basketball Seniors Celebrate on their Day with Thrilling 86-76 Double-Overtime Win over Tulane

2.25.17 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Senior Day is always a memorable day for the players taking part in their last home game. It is a time where emotions run the full gamut for the seniors, their families and their fans.

This year's Temple men's basketball Senior Day had all that, and so much more, as the Owls, led by their senior trio of Daniel Dingle, Mark Williams and Mike Robbins, posted a thrilling 86-76 double-overtime win over Tulane Saturday afternoon at the Liacouras Center..

Following a pregame ceremony where the program honored their senior players as well as managers Shaun Boyle and Amanda Duani, the Owls quickly jumped out of the gates with Robbins and Williams showing the way.

The first play set the tone as Shizz Alston tossed an alley-oop pass to Robbins, the former walk-on was making his first collegiate start.  Robbins was unable to finish at the rim, but found an open Williams who buried a three-pointer.

That duo would go on to score 13 of the Owls' first 17 points en route to a 17-4 lead.  Tulane, however, was not going to just fade away.  The Green Wave rattled off the next eight points to cut the margin to five at 17-12.

Two three-pointers by Shizz Alston, Jr., who finished with a game-high 25 points, and another by Dingle (13 points, 8 rebounds) helped Temple keep Tulane at arm's length, 28-20.  The visitors ran off six straight to cut the margin to a single possession before the Owls closed out the half on a 7-2 run to take a 35-28 lead into the locker room.

Cameron Reynolds then scored eight of his team-high 21 points over the first eight minutes with his final basket in that stretch giving Tulane its first lead, 47-46.  The Owls scored nine of the next 11 points, including Obi Enechionyia's (14 points) first three of the game, to give Temple a 55-49 advantage.

Tulane again did not fade, but rather rebounded with its best basketball of the contest.  The Green Wave went on a 14-2 run to take their own six-point lead, 63-57, with Colin Slater scoring eight of his 10 points in the stretch.

Enechionyia then drained a huge three-pointer from the right corner, but Melvin Frazier added two free throws 25 seconds apart to keep the Tulane lead at two possessions, 65-60, with 2:37 remaining.

Williams, who finished with a season-high 20 points, then made his biggest contribution of the game.  The 6-8 forward made a put-back off an Enechionyia miss and was fouled.  He converted the three-point play to cut the deficit to two, 65-63, with just under two minutes remaining.

Both teams missed opportunities in the closing minutes before Alston drove the lane, missing his initial shot.  Williams then tipped it to Alston, who put it in for the tying shot with eight seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

Williams took charge in the first overtime, scoring on drives to the basket in each of the team's first two possessions to give the Owls a 69-66 lead.  Malik Morgan, one of two Tulane players with a double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds), cut the margin to one with a layup with 1:44 on the clock.

Temple missed three-pointers on consecutive possessions, but the Owls shutdown the Green Wave defensively with Williams coming up with a key loose ball.  Alston was then fouled with five seconds on the clock.  The sophomore guard calmly hit both free throws to give Temple a three-point lead.

Morgan then made the Temple seniors wait for their celebration as he drained a three-pointer from the top of the key as time expired to send the contest into a second extra frame.

Temple took control quickly in the final five minutes, scoring the first seven points and never looking back. Quinton Rose opened the frame with a dunk which was followed by a Alston trey and an Enechioynia dunk.

Tulane never closed within six for the remainder of the contest with Alston converting eight of his perfect 10-for-10 at the line to seal the win.  Alston now has made 28 straight free throws with his last miss coming against Cincinnati on Dec. 28.

Robbins finished with seven points and career highs of four rebounds and 22 minutes played.

Temple (15-15, 6-11 American) closes out the regular season at USF on March 5 (2 pm/ESPNU/1210 AM WPHT).
