BALTIMORE, Md. – Temple women's track and field had a weekend filled with individual improvements. On Friday, the distance quad competed at the Larry Ellis Invitational where freshman Grace Moore set a new school record. On Saturday, the Owls faced the cold and rain at the Hughes Stadium for the 2017 Morgan State Legacy Invitational.
Hosted at Princeton, the Larry Ellis Invite featured only middle-distance and distance competitions. Moore, Millie Howard, Katie Leisher, and Katie Pinson represented Temple across three events.
"The highlight of the meet for us was the 3000m steeplechase," said assistant coach James Snyder. "While Katie Pinson reached a personal best, Grace is now a school record holder as a freshman."
Moore finished the race in 10:41.68 (11th), breaking the previous school record set by Pinson. Her new personal best time ranks her at seventh-fastest in the American Athletic Conference. Pinson too reached a personal record finishing the steeplechase 17 seconds faster than her last best mark with a time of 10:43.50 (16th), moving her up in conference rankings to No. 8.
Howard brought forth a solid performance in the 800 meter run. With her time of 2:08.97, she reached a season best and moved up to the No. 2 spot in the conference for the event.
The Larry Ellis 1500 meter race featured Leisher, who is preparing for next weekend's 5K race at Penn Relays. The sophomore ran a personal best time of 4:36.34.
Howard and Pinson returned to the track on Saturday for the 1500 meter race at Morgan State. The duo earned second and third places, respectively, with times of 4:36.37 and 4:40.38.
Crystal Jones took fourth overall in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.81. She returned for the 100 meter hurdles, finishing in fourth place once again in 14.93. Teammate Sydnee Jacques finished seventh in the event with a time of 15.50.
Temple ran a 4x100 meter relay team unseeded. The squad made up of Mariah Slade, Bionca St. Fleur, Kenya Gaston, and Jimmia McCluskey managed a top-five finish after completing the relay in 47.71 and beating its heat by a landslide.
Sophomore Ashton Dunkley represented the Owls in the 800 meter race. The Odessa, Del., native has showed continuous improvement over the course of the outdoor season, reaching a personal best time of 2:20.09 in Saturday's contest.
On the field, seniors Jimmia McCluskey, Simone Chapman, and Jacques competed in the long jump and triple jump. McCluskey's long jump mark of 5.74 meters was a season best. Chapman's leap of 11.56m in the triple jump also marked a season best. Jacques took fourth in the event with a mark of 11.47m.
Caitlin O'Brien, Emily Nist, and Megan Schneider ran the 5K race for Temple. Nist snagged second overall after finishing the race in 17:57.76. O'Brien (18:24.53) and Schneider (18:36.33) followed behind in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
The Owls will next compete at the 123rd Penn Relays beginning April 27.
