PHILADELPHIA – Luis Guzman knows a thing or two about winning championships.
The former Owl guard was a member of three Atlantic 10 Conference championship teams with the Temple Owls (2008, 2009, 2010) and served as the team captain his senior year. He returned to Temple two years ago as a graduate manager and in 2015-16 helped the Cherry and White capture its first American Athletic Conference regular season title.
Guzman, who earned his master's degree in sport business with a concentration in athletic administration from Temple in the spring of 2017, was an assistant coach for his native Dominican Republic U17 basketball team that won the 2017 Centrobasket title Sunday in Santo Domingo. Serving as an assistant coach, Guzman helped the team win all five of its games in the tournament, including an 81-80 thriller over Puerto Rico in the championship.
With the victory, the Dominican Republic qualifies for the 2018 FIBA U18 World Championship.
"In the past I have had the great opportunity to represent my country as a player, but being able to represent my country as a coach in the FIBA games is truly an honor," said Guzman . "I'm filled with so much gratitude. This is a great start to my coaching career. I would like to thank Coach Dunphy for teaching me his basketball philosophy. His knowledge and support is something that I will forever cherish."
Guzman, who earned his undergraduate degree from Temple in three-and-a-half years (Jan. 2010), played professionally in eight different countries over a five-year span upon graduation. He won titles while competing in the Dominican Republic, Denmark, Mongolia and Mexico. He also represented the Dominican Republic at the Pan American Games in 2011 and was a member of the silver-medal winning U17 team at the 2005 Centrobasket tournament.
