John Chaney Presented With Wanamaker Lifetime Achievement Award

Former Temple men's basketball coach John Chaney was honored with the Lifetime Achievement award at the 2017 John Wanamaker Athletic Awards ceremony and luncheon at the Crystal Tea Room in the Wanamaker Building on Wednesday afternoon. He was joined by former Temple women's basketball coach Dawn Staley, who received this year's Wanamaker Athletic Award for leading her current team, South Carolina, to the 2017 NCAA Championship.
One of two Naismith Hall of Fame Temple men's basketball coaches, Chaney led the Owls to 516 wins, 17 NCAA Tournament appearances and five trips to the Elite Eight in his 24 years at the helm (1982-83 thru 2005-06). He is the school's all-time winningest basketball coach and retired in 2006 with 741 career wins over 34 seasons, including 10 at Cheyney University.
Chaney earned consensus National Coach of the Year honors in 1988, the year he led Temple to its first and only #1 national ranking. He also earned USBWA National Coach of the Year honors in 1987. He won a record 296 Atlantic 10 Conference games and was named A10 Coach of the Year a record five times. His Temple teams won eight regular season A10 titles and six A10 Tournament championships.
In all, he led Temple to 23 postseason appearances in his 24 seasons at the helm. His six trips to the National Invitation Tournament were also successful as he guided the Owls to a third place finish in 2002 and a spot in the quarterfinals in 2003.
The legendary coach was inducted into the National College Basketball (2006), Temple University (2009) and Philadelphia Big 5 (2010) Halls of Fame following his retirement on March 13, 2006.
Chaney joined Temple in 1982 after 10 years as basketball coach at Cheyney University, where he turned the program into a national Division II power. His Cheyney teams compiled a phenomenal 225-59 record, appeared in eight national championship tournaments and won the NCAA Division II title in 1978.
Also being honored at the Wanamaker Awards Ceremony is Team Up Philly, who will receive the Robert P. Levy Community Service Award; and Wayne Allen, who will posthumously receive the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Sports Volunteer of the Year Award for "making a significant difference in the lives of young people through sports."
Since its inception in 1961, the John Wanamaker Athletic Award - presented by PHL Sports, a business development division of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB), in conjunction with Amerimar Enterprises/Rubenstein Partners - recognizes an athlete, team or organization that has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia, and to the team or sport in which they excel. The honor has been awarded to numerous Philadelphia sports icons and teams through the years.
