Field Hockey Falls at No. 14 Northwestern

9.8.17 | Field Hockey

EVANSTON, Ill. - Facing another of the nation's best teams, Temple field hockey struggled offensively in a 9-1 loss at No. 14 Northwestern (3-3) on Friday afternoon. The Owls (0-4) fell into an early hole and scored just one second-half goal to stop the Wildcats' run.

Keys to the Game
> Northwestern scored on its first penalty corner of the contest, and never let up in the first half.

> The Wildcats tallied five first-half goals with three of them coming on corners.

> The Owls got one defensive save from sophomore Becky Gerhart in the opening half, but were unable to get a shot on goal.

> Just over three minutes into the second half, Temple made its first penalty corner of the game count as Rachael Mueller scored on a rebound to get the Owls on the board.

> Over the final 30 minutes, Northwestern added four more goals for the final tally of 9-1.

Game Notes
> Northwestern scored two goals on penalty strokes, both in the second half.

> Sophomore Saar de Breij notched two of the first three goals for the Wildcats and was the only multiple-goal scorer of the contest.

> Junior Chloe Johnson came into the cage for the second half, making six saves for the Owls.

Quotable
> "Honestly, it was a frustrating day for us," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "We were not as focused on the details as we needed to be to play against the No. 14 team in the country. We were able to connect a bit more in our attacking 50 as the game went on, and we did execute on our attack penalty corner, but we have to be consistent throughout the 70 minute game. Northwestern did a good job of playing quality, physical hockey, and as a group, we need to really focus on applying immediate pressure on the ball sooner."

"I thought Chloe (Johnson) did well, coming in and making some big saves. I thought the tenacity of Rachael Mueller was good on attack to generate some opportunities. I was also happy to see a lot of contributions from our underclassmen today."
