#13 Gymnastics Hits the Road for Sunday's Tri-Meet at Towson

PHILADELPHIA - Looking to build off the momentum of a record-breaking opening weekend, No. 13 Temple gymnastics is set for a tri-meet at Towson on Jan. 14. Along with the Owls, Towson will host William & Mary on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Scouting the Owls
> Temple will enter Sunday's meet ranked No. 13 in the nation by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches / Women (NACGCW), its highest-ever national ranking in program history. The Owls are ranked at No. 2 in the North East region only behind Michigan.
> The Owls reset the program record for highest season-opening team score with a 194.875 in their 2018 debut at the Little Boston Invitational on Jan. 6. Overall, Temple placed first out of four teams, topping Maryland, Towson, and New Hampshire. The meet marked Temple's first time beating New Hampshire in program history and its first time beating Maryland since 1995.
> Sophomore Jaylene Everett kicked off 2018 with a career best performance on vault, scoring a 9.825. Everett also tied her career best floor exercise score with a 9.8. Saturday's performance earned her Owlsports.com/ Under Armour Student-Athlete of the Week.
> Freshman Tori Edwards opened up her collegiate career with a 9.825 floor exercise score to place second overall.
> Temple's beam squad topped last season's high score of 48.775 with a 48.8 overall. Sophomore Whitney King posted at career-high score of 9.8 to earn the Owls' highest score in the event.
> Kerry Arone rose as Temple's top scorer on bars with a 9.8 to tie for fourth place. As a whole, Temple earned a 48.55 in the event.
> The Owls are led by co-captains Sahara Gipson and Breahna Wiczkowski in 2018.
> Temple closed out the 2017 season with a 16-18 overall record and 22 individual event titles including the program's first ever ECAC uneven bars champion in Alexa Philip. The squad reset the school record for highest team score six times in 2017 and closed out the regular season with a score of 194.975. The 2017 team now holds the top 10 highest team scores in program history.
> One Owl, Daisy Todd, qualified for the 2017 NCAA regional championship after closing out her debut season with ECAC Rookie of the Year honors.

Scouting the Tigers
> The Tigers also opened the 2018 season on Jan. 6 at the Little Boston Invitational. Towson finished fourth overall with a team score of 193.8. Sunday will mark the 54th all-time meeting between Temple and Towson.
> Towson's best performance so far was on floor at the Little Boston Invitational, posting a 48.725 just behind the Owls.
> In the squad's final rotation on Saturday, junior Cortni Baker placed first on vault with a career-high 9.850.
> Towson senior Tyra McKellar won the all-around competition with a 39.075, just shy of her career-high 39.300.
> In 2017, the Tigers had three individuals qualify for regional championships in Gabriella Yarussi, Tyra McKellar and Mary Elle Arduino and head coach Vicki May was named Southeast Regional Head Coach of the Year. Towson posted its season high score of 195.675 at Rutgers on Feb. 24, 2017.

Scouting the Tribe
> Sunday's meet will serve as William & Mary's season opener and will mark the Owls' and the Tribe's 49th all-time meeting.
> William & Mary closed out 2017 with a season high score of 193.925 and a fourth place finish at the ECAC Championships.
> The Tribe lost two all-conference caliber all-arounders from last season's team to graduation – Briana Gironda (2017 ECAC beam champion) and Olivia O'Connor. The returning squad is bolstered by four freshman.
