Fencing Goes 3-2 Against Top Competition at the Penn State Invitational

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - It was an up and down day for Temple fencing at the Penn State Invitational, but the Owls came away with a record of 3-2 against a very strong lineup of teams. Temple now stands at 7-3 overall for the 2017-18 season after two dual meets.

Meet Results
> The Owls started the day with an extremely close match against Columbia, a team tied for first in the final College Fencing 360 Coaches Poll of last year. Temple lost 14-13 with the foil team winning 7-2 and sabre winning 5-4, while epee lost 8-1.
> Temple defeated Haverford 24-3 in its second match with sabre sweeping 9-0, epee winning 8-1 and foil winning 7-2.
> In their third match, the Owls beat UNC 17-10 (foil 7-2, sabre 5-4, epee 5-4)
> Temple's third win of the day was a 15-12 victory over a talented Yale team (sabre 5-4, epee 5-4, foil 5-4).
> The final match of the day ended in a 16-11 lost to host Penn State. Foil won 5-4 while sabre lost 5-4 and epee lost 7-2.
> The foil squad finished a perfect 5-0 for the day (7-2 vs. Columbia, 7-2 vs. Haverford, 7-2 vs. UNC, 5-4 vs. Penn State and 5-4 vs. Yale).

Individual Highlights
> The best record of the day belonged to sophomore Kennedy Lovelace in foil who went 11-1 overall. She was a perfect 3-0 against Columbia, UNC and Yale, and went 2-1 vs. Penn State.
> Sophomore Camille Simmons led the epee squad with a record of 8-5.
> Sophomore Kerry Plunkett had the strongest record in sabre at 7-3, going 3-0 against Columbia.
> Junior Auset Muhammad and freshman Kari Weiner each went 8-3 for foil, with Muhammad finishing 2-1 against Penn State.
> For sabre, junior Blessing Olaode was 5-2 overall, while sophomore Malia Hee went 2-1 against Columbia and freshman Eva Hinds went 2-1 against Penn State.

Next Up
> The Owls will have a busy two days next weekend at the Philadelphia Invitational hosted by Penn on Jan. 20-21. Temple will fence against Cornell, Northwestern, St. John's, Duke, FDU, Yale, Brown, Wagner and NYU.
