Men’s Basketball to Honor Elite Eight Teams

1.18.18 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Temple Athletics will celebrate the anniversaries of two Elite Eight men's basketball teams at upcoming games this season.

For the team's Jan. 28 game against UConn (8 pm), the 1992-93 Temple Owls will be back at the Liacouras Center to celebrate their 25th Anniversary.  That squad, under the direction of Hall of Fame coach John Chaney, posted a 20-13 overall record.  Led by juniors Aaron McKie (20.6 ppg) and Eddie Jones (17.0 ppg), that Temple team was the seventh seed in the West Region.  The Owls defeated 10th-seed Missouri, 75-61, and 15-seed Santa Clara, 68-57, to advance to the Sweet 16.

Trailing by three at the half to third-seeded Vanderbilt, Temple went on a 15-3 run and never looked back in posting the 67-59 win.  Michigan's "Fab Five" foiled Temple's run to the Final Four, besting the Owls 77-72 despite a 21-point, 9-assist effort from Rick Brunson.  Jones and McKie were both named to the All-Region team.

The following Wednesday (Feb. 1), the 1987-88 team will be honored on their 30th Anniversary at halftime of the Owls' game against #7/4 Wichita State (7 pm).  Inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 in 2015, the 1987-88 team finished as the Associated Press' #1 ranked team and posted a 32-2 overall record and perfect 18-0 conference mark.

Under the direction of Chaney, who would be named National Coach of the Year, the Owls won their first 14 games before suffering a heartbreaking one-point loss at eighth-ranked UNLV. Temple rebounded to win its next 18 games.  Among those victories was a classic Big 5 game against #10 Villanova, 98-86 at McGonigle Hall, and a road win over #5 North Carolina, 83-66.

Temple would enter the NCAA Tournament on a 15-game win streak, and the top-seeded Owls then defeated Lehigh (87-73), Georgetown (74-53) and Richmond (69-47) to advance to the Elite Eight.  There the Owls fell to fifth-ranked Duke, 63-53.

Freshman guard Mark Macon led the team and was named to the Associated Press All-America Second Team.  Macon was joined on the All-Atlantic 10 First Team by his backcourt mate, senior Howard Evans, and fellow senior forward Tim Perry, who earned A10 Player of the Year accolades. Junior forward Mike Vreeswyk earned second team all-conference honors.
