Field Hockey Hosts #25 Old Dominion Friday; Travels to Drexel on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - Temple field hockey is hoping to find its next win as the Owls take on #25 Old Dominion (7-5, 1-3) in BIG EAST play on Friday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. at Howarth Field. In their other game this weekend, the Owls (2-11, 0-4) will head across town to Drexel (5-7) in a non-conference contest on Sunday, Oct. 14 at noon.

Scouting Temple
> The Owls are coming off an 0-2 weekend after falling 3-2 to Georgetown and 6-0 to Saint Joseph's. Senior Jessika Daniels and freshman Tali Popinko scored their first goals of the season (first career goal for Popinko) against the Hoyas, but a penalty stroke goal proved to be the game-winner for Georgetown. Freshman Claire Thomas made her first career defensive save in the contest.
> Four different players have scored two goals each for the Owls to lead the team offensively, including junior tri-captain Kathryn Edgar, who also has three assists for a team-high seven points.
> Leading Temple in goal is senior Chloe Johnson with 109 saves and a save percentage of .716. Her 9.08 saves per game rank her second among all players in NCAA Division I. As a team, the Owls also rank second nationally with 9.69 saves per game.
> With 13 defensive saves in 2018, Temple leads all teams in NCAA Division I. Sophomore Dani Batze has six defensive saves to rank first in the nation while junior Becky Gerhart has four (tied for fourth in the nation).
> The Owls' staff was completed on Sept. 18 with the official hiring of assistant coach Ross Gilham-Jones, a native of Great Britain. Gilham-Jones, who works primarily with the team's attack, most recently spent almost a year coaching the WC Eagles club team out of Pottstown.

Scouting Old Dominion
> The Monarchs are coming off a hard weekend after losing to #4 Duke, 5-1. Jess Milller was able to score for Old Dominion while Kealsie Robles made a career-high eight saves against the Blue Devils.
> Four players have been awarded BIG EAST weekly honors for the 2018 season including Rebecca Birch (Offensive), Merle Knobloch (Freshman), Kristen Vick (Defensive), and Ilse Westera (Freshman). Birch and junior Erin Huffman lead the team in points totaling 16 each.
> Senior goalkeeper Robles was named to Team USA for the US Senior National Team and participated in the Four Nation's Women's Ibaraki Tournament in Osaka, Japan. Due to her involvement, Robles missed three matchups earlier this season.
> The Monarchs had a seven-game winning streak early this season before falling 4-2 to #2 UConn. Old Dominion is now 7-5 overall and 1-3 in the BIG EAST Conference.

Scouting Drexel
> Drexel is 5-7 overall and coming off a 6-2 loss against James Madison and an 8-0 defeat at the hands of #14 Saint Joseph's. Tess Horan and Emily Owens both scored for the Dragons against JMU.
> While facing Ohio on Sept. 30, five Dragons scored in a 5-1 victory. Tess Bernheimer leads Drexel with eight goals and 17 total points in 2018..
> During preseason, four players were selected to compete in the Young Women's National Championship. Drexel head coach Denise Zelenak was also selected to coach USA Red Team during the tournament.

Series History vs. Old Dominion
> Old Dominion leads the overall series against Temple 21-4. Temple had a three-game winning streak from 2014-16 against the Monarchs. Last year, ODU beat Temple 4-0 in Norfolk.

Series History vs. Drexel
> Temple leads the overall series 18-11. The teams last met in 2016 with Drexel winning 3-1 at Howarth Field.
