Comeback Falls Short for Women's Basketball at Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. — The Temple women's basketball team rallied from a 15-point deficit to tie the game late in the third, but Ole Miss stalled the Owls' comeback bid and finished out a 62-55 victory at home. The Rebels improved to 2-1 on the season, while Temple suffered its first loss of the young season to move to 2-1.
Keys to the Game
> A cold first quarter and an overall slow first half, saw Temple shoot just 26% in the first 20 minutes, as Ole Miss jumped out to a 21-8 lead.
> Temple cleaned it up in the second half, using a stout defense and a 13-0 offensive run to tie things at 38-38.
> Ole Miss did not relinquish the lead however, and outscored Temple 11-2 to close the third and open the fourth quarter.
> Temple made one final run to get the lead down to three, but Ole Miss held on for the win.
> The Rebels out-shot Temple 43% to 33%, nullifying Temple's 39-31 advantage on the glass.
Individual Highlights
> Sophomore Mia Davis poured in a career-best 22 points, pulling down six boards to lead the Owls.
> Freshman Marissa Mackins helped Davis key the comeback, scoring 15 points and adding three assists.
> Graduate student Alliya Butts had seven points and a team-best four assists, while sophomore Emani Mayo added six points to pace the offense.
> Junior Shantay Taylor pulled down six rebounds, while classmate Shannen Atkinson added five.
First Quarter
> Tied 2-2, Ole Miss scored 10 unanswered, as part of a 17-2 run, that put the hosts up 19-4.
> Temple struggled to find its rhythm on offense, but cut it to 21-8 on four late points from Butts to close the first.
Second Quarter
> Temple outscored Ole Miss 14-10 to close the gap somewhat in the second.
> The Owls' defense stood tough early in the frame, as an 8-2 run made it just a six point game at 25-19.
> Ole Miss used a 6-1 run to go back up 11, before a Butts jumper set the halftime score to 31-22 in favor of the Rebels.
Third Quarter
> Ole Miss pushed the lead to 13 (38-25) early in the third, but Temple put together a run to make it a game.
> Eight points from Davis and five from Mackins, while the Owls held Ole Miss scoreless for over four minutes, tied the game at 38-38.
> The Rebels responded with a 7-2 run to close the frame leading 45-40.
Fourth Quarter
> Ole Miss hit a pair of quick buckets to go up by nine early in the final frame, but again Temple battled back, making it a three point game on a Davis basket with 5:49 on the clock
> One final surge did the trick for Ole Miss, as the Rebels pushed the lead back to nine, 57-47, with 2:53 to play.
> Temple got as close as six, but time wasn't on the Owls' side, with Ole Miss closing out the victory.
