Women's Basketball Downs Delaware State in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team scored the first nine points of the game and never trailed, as the Owls topped visiting Delaware State, 75-61, in the season opener for both teams.
Keys to the Game
> Temple shot 41% from the field, with a huge 40-24 advantage in points in the paint.
> The Owls held Delaware State to 34% from the field and 26% from three.
> Temple out-rebounded the Hornets, 47-39, and allowed just nine second chance points on the night.
> Temple led by as many as 23 points late in the third quarter, before a final DSU run that set the final to 75-61.
Individual Highlights
> Graduate student Alliya Butts made her return to the line-up, after losing the 2017-18 season due to injury, pouring on 18 points, with team-best totals of five assists and four steals.Â
> Sophomore Mia Davis picked up where she left off, contributing a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
> Two other players finished in double-figures for the Owls, sophomore Emani Mayo with 13 points and freshman Alexa Williamson with 11.
> Elsewhere, sophomore Breanna Perry added six points and seven boards, while classmate Desiree Oliver added four points and six rebounds.
First Quarter
> A 9-0 start to the game gave Temple early momentum, as Butts drilled her first triple of the game, just two minutes into play.
> A pair of Davis free throws put Temple up 16-9, before Delaware State cut it to four on a three from Lanayjha Ashe.
> Temple led by as many as 10 in the frame, and still held a 22-14 edge after one.Â
Second Quarter
> Temple increased its lead with a 19-16 advantage in the second backed by six points from Butts and five from Mayo.
> A Butts steal and fastbreak made it a 12-point Temple lead, before Delaware State got it down to eight on two occasions.Â
> Temple surged to take its largest lead of the game on a Butts three with 2:06 to play.Â
> The Hornets cut into the lead, however, using a 5-0 run to close the frame.
Third Quarter
> A huge third quarter for the Owls saw the Temple lead grow to 23 points.Â
> Davis and Mayo had six points each in the stanza, which ended with Temple on top, 66-43.
Fourth Quarter
> Delaware State made a late run in the fourth, outscoring Temple, 18-9.
> The final result was never in doubt, however, as the Owls held on for the 75-61 win.
