Women's Basketball Plays at Big 5 Rival Saint Joseph's on Friday

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team travels to nearby Saint Joseph's to take on the Hawks at Hagan Arena at 5:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.

THE OWLS
> Temple starts the season 1-0 after a victory over Delaware State in Tuesday's home opener.
> The Owls finished 12-19 a year ago, with a 3-13 record in the American, but upset sixth-seeded Wichita State to advance to the conference tournament quarterfinals.
> After losing the 2017-18 season to injury, graduate student Alliya Butts is back to lead the Owls for her fifth year, and she will be supported by a talented and more experienced group. 
> Sophomore Mia Davis was second on the team last year in both scoring and rebounding, while classmate Emani Mayo was third on the team in scoring and total assists. 
> The rest of last year's freshman class -- Desiree Oliver and Breanna Perry -- both had solid rookie campaigns. Oliver, who missed nine games due to injury, still finished fourth in scoring and second in assists per game. Perry started 27 games last season.
> Also returning for the Owls is three-point threat Lena Niang, as well as post players, Shantay Taylor and Shannen Atkinson.
> Temple has a fantastic freshman class, with the team welcoming high-scoring rookies in guard Marissa Mackins and forward Alexa Williams. Another rookie, Destiny Samuel, will sit the season due to injury.

LAST TIME OUT: Temple 75, Delaware State 61
> Temple started the 2018-19 season with a 75-61 victory over visiting Delaware State on Tuesday at McGonigle Hall.
> The Owls scored the first nine points of the game and never trailed, as Temple out-shot the Hornets, 41% to 34%, and had a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint.
> Alliya Butts made her return to the line-up, after losing the 2017-18 season due to injury, pouring on 18 points, with team-best totals of five assists and four steals. 
> Mia Davis picked up where she left off, contributing a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
> Two other players finished in double-figures for the Owls, Emani Mayo with 13 points and Alexa Williamson with 11.

SCOUTING SAINT JOSEPH'S
> Saint Joseph's opens the 2018-19 season with Friday's game against the Owls.
> The Hawks return two starters and 10 letterwinners overall from last year's squad that advanced to the title game of the 2018 A-10 Championship and earned the program's 11th postseason WNIT bid
> SJU was picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic 10 race this season, according to a poll of the conference's head coaches.
> Senior guard Alyssa Monaghan was selected to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Third Team, after leading the A-10 and finishing eighth nationally in assists-to-turnover ratio (3.13). 
> Monaghan was last year's team leader in assists (125), steals (34), and threes (57), while averaging 10.1 points per game.
> Also returning for SJU is senior guard Sarah Veilleux who finished second on the Hawks in scoring last season, averaging 12.8 points per game, including 49 threes.

TEMPLE VS. SAINT JOSEPH'S
> Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series with Temple, 44-36, but the Owls have won 11 out of the last 15 meetings.

LAST TIME THEY MET
> Temple won a thriller, 69-66 at McGonigle Hall in the team's last meeting. > The Owls made a layup and two clutch free throws in the final 16 seconds to rally for the Philadelphia Big 5 win. 
> The Owls started slow with just nine points in the first quarter, but picked up the pace to out-score the Hawks in each of the remaining stanzas.
> SJU scored four straight points for a 66-65 lead with 19 seconds left, but Temple's Tanaya Atkinson answered with her final bucket to put the Owls back ahead for good. 
> Atkinson led all scorers with 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Mia Davis also had 13 rebounds and finished with 15 points.
> Amanda Fioravanti led the Hawks with 22 points.

BATTLE IN THE BIG 5
> Friday's match-up opens Philadelphia Big 5 play for both teams.
> Temple finished 2-2 in the Big 5 last year, with wins over La Salle and Saint Joseph's.
> Penn and Villanova tied for the title, each going 3-1. 
> Saint Joseph's and La Salle each finished with 1-3 records.
> Temple has gone 81-79 in the Big 5 since play begane in 1979.
> The Owls own 10 Big 5 titles, including three under Cardoza. The most recent Temple Big 5 crown came in 2016-17 when the Cherry and White went 4-0 against their local rivals.
