Women's Basketball Notches Big 5 Win Over Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team needed a late defensive hold and got it, sealing a gritty Philadelphia Big 5 win over Saint Joseph's, 58-52, at Hagan Arena. The victory gives Temple a 2-0 record to start the young season, while the Hawks open with an 0-1 mark.Â

> Temple got off to another hot start, leading 9-0 early, before SJU found its footing behind the arc.
> Hot three point shooting from the Hawks tied the game at the break, and both teams led in the third quarter.
> Temple started the fourth quarter with a six point lead, which was quickly erased by a 6-0 SJU run.
> The Owls went up by seven backed by five points from Oliver, before SJU cut it two a two-point game twice.
> Up by two, Temple came up with a pair of offensive rebounds, a big defensive stop, and then iced the game on the line to win 58-52.

> SJU made up ground in the second, outscoring Temple, 13-8.
> Temple led 23-16 before a 9-2 Hawks run tied things at 15-15.
> Both teams traded scores before the break to send it into halftime tied at 27-27.
Third Quarter
> Saint Joseph's broke through midway through the third to grab its first lead of the game, but the Owls battled right back.
> With the Hawks up by three, Temple used a 10-3 run to end the frame with a 45-39 lead.
Fourth Quarter
> SJU quickly erased Temple's lead with a 6-0 run, before the Owls made a run of their own, 7-0 to go up 52-45.
> Five-straight Hawk points cut it to a two point deficit, and after the teams traded baskets the Owls were up 54-52. with 1:01 to play.
> A pair of offensive boards extended Temple's possession and turned off the shot clock, forcing the hosts to foul.
> After Temple went up 55-52, Oliver blocked a game-tying three, and Mayo and Atkinson connected on free throws at the other end to finish it out.
