Cross Country's Kristian Jensen Set to Represent Denmark at European Cross Country Championships
12.3.18 | Men's Cross Country
PHILADELPHIA -- Temple men's cross country sophomore Kristian Jensen has earned the honor of being selected to represent Denmark at the 2018 SPAR European Cross Country Championships on Sunday, Dec. 9 as announced by the Danish Athletics Association. The 25th edition of the championship meet will be held at the Beekse Bergen Safari Park in Tilburg, Netherlands and will feature the largest field to date with 616 athletes from 38 countries as listed on the final entries.
"I'm incredibly excited for Kristian to have the opportunity to compete this weekend in Tilburg," said head coach James Snyder. "Representing your country in international competition is the greatest honor in athletics, and I know he's looking forward to the opportunity."
Jensen earned the call-up after a standout sophomore campaign in Cherry and White. In October, he helped the Owls to a third place finish at the Princeton Invitational against a contingent of competition from the Mid-Atlantic region. The Esbjerg, Denmark native crossed the line first for the Cherry and White, finishing fourth in the field and running one of the fastest 8K's in program history at 24:08.7.
After being named the American Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for his outstanding performance at Princeton, Jensen helped his squad to a record-breaking second place finish at the AAC Championships in New Orleans, La. The sophomore earned All-AAC honors for his sixth place finish at the conference meet.
Two weeks later, Jensen put on another impressive performance at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, leading the team to their highest-ever finish of sixth place. He conquered the 10,000-meter course to cross the line first for Temple, finishing 13th in the field with a time of 31:34 to add All-Region honors to his impressive resume.
Jensen wrapped up his sophomore season in Cherry and White as the individual champion at the IC4A Championships in mid-November. Jensen ran the 8,000-meter course at Van Cortlandt Part in Bronx, N.Y. in 22:36 to place first in the 157 person field, leading the team to a second place finish overall.
While Jensen's success is greatly attributed to his hard work and determination, he credits his teammates for his ability to get to where he is today.
"I'm extremely excited to be running in the national team uniform again, but it would be fantastic to see some of the guys in Cherry and White out there with me," said Jensen. "My teammates have been instrumental in my success this year, and I wouldn't be in this race if it weren't for them. I'll definitely be thinking of them when I toe that starting line."
Jensen is set to run 8,300 meters in the under 23 race on the course at Beekse Bergen Safari Park. The U23 event is set to start at 11:35 CET in Tilburg, Netherlands (5:35 a.m. EST).
