Women’s Soccer Earns First Win of the Season with 2-0 Victory over Sacred Heart

8.24.18 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA- Temple (1-1) earned its first win of the season in a great showing against Sacred Heart (0-2) on Friday night at the Temple Sports Complex. The Owls netted two goals and controlled possession against the Pioneers, holding them to a blank slate for a 2-0 victory.

Keys to the Match
> Junior forward Jules Blank ignited the Owls' offense from the start, scoring her second goal of the season in the fifth minute of the match with a header off an assist from senior forward Kerri McGinley.
> Sophomore midfielder Emma Wilkins was a catalyst off the bench for the Owls, scoring her first goal of the season with a strike from the top of the 18.
> Sophomore defender Aisha Brown was a dominant force on the back line. She thwarted a Sacred Heart breakaway with a key defensive play.

Match Notes
> The early goal by Blank set the tone for the Owls offensively in the first half. Temple dominated the half in terms of possession and out shot Sacred Heart 8-1.
> Sacred Heart's best chance to score came on a free kick just above the 18 in the 60th minute.
> The Owls recorded their first shutout of the season. This was a result of a brilliant effort by the stout defensive line and big saves by junior goalkeeper Morgan Basileo.
> Wilkins had a great look on goal that unfolded in a seemingly slow motion sequence. Her initial shot was deflected by Sacred Heart goalkeeper Nicole Sambuco, but hit the crossbar. The ball bounced straight down right in front of the goal line before Sambuco was able to collect and clear it.

Quotable
> "It was great for the players to see that they stuck together and they worked so hard this week," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "They put in a lot of work and then they got their reward tonight. We played better than we did last week and scored two more beautiful goals."
> "[Jules Blank's] partnership with Kerri up top is priceless," said O'Connor. "Kerri brings everybody away and Jules sneaks in and gets the goals… She reads the runs that Kerri makes. She's just a goal scorer. She just loves it."
