Men's Cross Country Finishes 11th at Joe Piane Invitational
9.28.18 | Men's Cross Country
SOUTH BEND, IND. – The Temple University men's cross country squad earned an 11th place overall finish on a Friday afternoon, competing in the Blue Division of the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational for the first time in program history among some of the best cross country teams in the country.
Team Results
> The Owls faced a contingent of nationally ranked opponents at their five mile race, as No. 2 BYU won the most prestigious section of the day with 23 points. Behind them was Wyoming, followed by the hosting Notre Dame squad, who has received votes in the latest USTFCCCA poll. Wrapping up the top five was No. 29 Furman, followed by Weber State.
> The Cherry and White compiled 256 total points to earn an 11th place finish. They missed a top 10 team finish by just two points, finishing right behind a Utah Valley squad that earned 254 points on the day.
> The remaining competitors seen in the Blue Section were Dayton, Florida State, Illinois State, Iowa, Miami (Ohio), California, UT-Arlington, Oklahoma, Santa Clara, and Incarnate Word.
From the Coach
> "Today was disappointing on the men's side, and it was not a performance that I believe accurately reflects our team," said head coach James Snyder. "We did not compete to our potential, which is something that we need to learn from moving forward. Tactical issues will need to be resolved, and we will come out in two weeks to put together a solid showing before heading into the conference meet."
Race Notes
> In his debut collegiate race wearing Cherry and White, junior Harry Powell crossed the line first for the Owls with a time of 24:39.9, earning him a 33rd place finish overall.
> Just over two seconds behind Powell was senior Louis Corgliano, who finished his first ever five mile as an Owl with a time of 24:42.2 for a 36th place finish.
> Powell and Corgliano highlighted today's race in Notre Dame, working well together over the latter stages to push one another through the course.
Up Next
> A handful of Temple runners will travel to Bethlehem, Pa. tomorrow, Sept. 29 to compete in the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University. The men are set to race at 12:15 p.m., followed by the women at 1:00 p.m. sharp.
> The full squad will be back in action for their last regular-season meet of the year on Saturday, Oct. 13. The Owls will travel to Princeton, N.J. to compete at the Princeton Invitational for their final official race before the American Athletic Conference Championships in New Orleans, La.
