Women’s Soccer Makes History in 1-0 Double OT Win Over No. 19 USF

9.30.18 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA—Temple women's soccer (6-7, 2-2 AAC) showed relentless effort and a fearless mentality in their 1-0 double overtime victory over No. 19 USF (6-2, 1-1 AAC). The Owls edged out the Bulls in the 105th minute, with the golden goal coming off the boot of freshman Gabriela Johnson. This win marks Temple's first triumph over a ranked opponent since 1995.

Keys to the Match
> Johnson's golden goal in the 105th minute was the culmination of the sheer effort the Owls displayed throughout the match. She created the play on the right flank. Johnson maneuvered past several USF defenders and sent a ground ball on goal from right outside the box. The ball rolled past a USF defender and the sprawled keeper, tapping the bottom of the left post and finding the back of the net.
> Temple silenced USF's prolific scorer, Evelyne Viens. Viens is second in the nation in goals (11) and she did not record a single shot throughout the 105-minute contest. This is a tribute to the Owls' lockdown defense and commitment to challenging the Bulls' strengths.

Match Notes
> The Owls' energy and grit were apparent on all ends of the field. They created many great opportunities to get on the scoresheet. In the 74th minute, Emily Keitel served a soaring corner kick into the middle of the box. The ball found the head of Sarah McGlinn, whose header landed wide right. Later in the same minute, McGlinn fed Emma Wilkins in the box. Wilkins' defender was out of position and she fired a shot on goal, but it went straight to the keeper's gloves. Wilkins was at it again in the 95th minute. She had a breakaway up the left flank and launched a left-footed shot. Again, the well-positioned keeper came up with the save.
> Temple's full-team defensive effort was instrumental in the double overtime win. The Owls' backline shut down the USF offense that had outscored its opponents 27-5 coming into the match. Aisha Brown stripped Viens multiple times and raced up the sideline to set up opportunities for the rest of the squad.
> Goalkeeper Morgan Basileo made several huge saves to keep the Bulls off the board. In the 61st minute, USF rocketed a shot toward the net and Basileo leaped and punched it out to safety. She made another clutch save in the 92nd minute to prevent a USF golden goal. USF's Aubrey Megrath sent a dangerous shot on goal, but Basileo was well-positioned to extinguish the attempt.
> This is Temple's second overtime contest of the season. Both matches ended with a Gabi Johnson golden goal.
> After notching her fourth goal of the season, Johnson is now second on the team in goals and points (9).
> This marks Temple's first victory over a ranked opponent since 1995 and first victory over USF in program history. The Owls also handed the Bulls their first conference defeat of the season.
> Temple recorded its fifth shutout of the year. USF has not been held scoreless in any of its matches this season. Basileo has recorded wins in each of Temple's shutouts.

Quotable
> "They are so gritty and determined," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "We keep talking about being brave. They were coming off and helping each other and getting double teams. That's brave, because if you make a mistake, [USF] is going to go to goal. Against a team that quality, it's just phenomenal."
> O'Connor's take on Johnson's golden goal: "It was a result of the Temple attitude. You could see that Gabi was a little down on herself because she had a chance earlier and didn't take it. The girls really rallied around her. They believed in her, I believed in her, everyone believed in her. She made that goal. It was not a great opportunity and she went up a strong, experienced defender. Her heart and desire were tremendous. It just epitomized everybody's play today."

Next Up
> Temple has an 11-day break in action, as they return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 11 at Cincinnati. The Owls will take on the Bearcats at Gettler Stadium at 7 p.m.
