Quinton Rose Scores Season-High 26 Points as Men's Basketball Holds off Memphis

1.24.19 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Quinton Rose exploded out of the gate and finished with a season-high 26 points in lifting Temple men's basketball to an 85-76 over Memphis (12-7, 4-2) at the Liacouras Center. The Owls (15-4, 5-1) built a 20-point lead midway through the first half and never trailed, despite letting the Tigers come nearly all the way back in the second half.

Game Summary
> Rose scored 15 of his points in the first 10 minutes in helping the Owls to a 14-0 run that gave them a 20-point, 28-8 lead at 9:50.
> Memphis cut the deficit to eight by halftime, to three early in the second half, and to two near the five-minute mark.
> The Tigers were still within six points with two minutes to go, but the Owls' defense, highlighted by two Alani Moore II steals, kept them from scoring again.
> The Owls won despite a huge, 52-28 advantage by Memphis in points in the paint, and a 46-34 lead by the Tigers on the glass.
> Five players reached double figures in scoring for Temple for the first time in the 2018-19 season.

Individual Highlights
> Rose made five shots from three-point range, making all five in his first six attempts. He also added five assists to his career-high 26 points.
> Nate Pierre-Louis scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.
> Shizz Alston, Jr., De'Vondre Perry and Moore all scored 10 points apiece, while Ernest Aflakpui pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
> Perry tied his career high with four steals while Moore finished with three.

First Half
> Rose came out blazing, hitting five of his first six attempts from long range in helping the Owls go 7-of-9 from behind the arc over the first 11 minutes.
> Three of those treys were part of a 14-0 run that put Temple up by 20 points, 28-8 with 9:50 left in the first.
> Memphis missed each of its first nine shots from long range and ended up just 1-for-14 in the period.
> Temple's lead stayed at 14 or more until the final two minutes of the half.
> Justyn Hamilton converted a three-point play for an 18-point lead at 3:31, but the Owls did not score again before the break.
> Memphis closed with a 10-run to cut the deficit to eight by halftime, 41-33.

Second Half
> The Owls briefly got their lead back to 10 points early in the second half before a 7-0 Memphis run got the Tigers within three, 45-42 at 16:52.
> Hamilton scored another old-fashioned three-point play as part of a 7-0 run that got the Owls back up by 10 near the 15-minute mark.
> Memphis hung around and had its way in the paint, getting the deficit back to seven three times before a 10-3 run made it a two-point game, 69-67 with 5:31 remaining.
> Both teams traded free throws over a final five minutes that saw very few field goals and a number of players get into foul trouble. Both Aflakpui and Hamilton fouled out for the Owls, with Pierre-Louis picking up four fouls.
> Temple was able to get its lead back to at least two possessions the rest of the way, and Alston hit his first and only three-pointer at 2:20 for an eight-point, 80-72 lead.
> Memphis hit its final bucket at the two-minute mark to get within six, but did not score again. Moore came up with back-to-back steals in the final minute, also hitting two free throws while Perry hit one to hold off the Tigers.
