DALLAS- The Temple Owls lost to the #19 SMU Mustangs, 45-21, Saturday evening. The Owls fall to 5-2 and 2-1 in conference play while the Mustangs move to 7-0 and 3-0 in the conference.

Temple struggled to keep the SMU passing offense in check and had a hard time getting its own offense going in the first half. The Owls continued to fight back, cutting the lead to 10 multiple times, but the Mustangs potent offense was able to fire back and maintain a lead throughout the second half.

How It Happened

SMU started the game with a quick score to take a 7-0 lead. QB Shane Buechele hit Reggie Roberson, Jr. for a 33-yard touchdown.
Following a three and out for the Owls, SMU tacked on another field goal to extend the lead to 10-0.
The Owls came up with a goal line stand at the beginning of the second quarter to prevent the Mustangs from scoring again.
The Mustangs, however, increased their lead on a 75-yard TD catch by Roberson to make the score 17-0.
Following a short kick, Temple started the next drive from its own 35 yardline. The Owls were able to put together some big plays that led to their first score of the game. Russo connected with WR Branden Mack down the sideline for 26-yards and again with TE Kenny Yeboah for 20-yards that got Temple down to the one yardline. RB Re'Mahn Davis finished the drive off with a one-yard touchdown run that made it a 17-7 game.
Both teams traded punts before SMU scored again at the end of the half. A 10-yard touchdown pass from Buechele to James Proche made the score 24-7.
The Owls started the second half from their own 42 yardline. Russo connected with WR Jose Barbon for a 24-yard pass on a third-and-12 that put Temple into SMU territory. Russo and Mack finished off the drive with a 25-yard touchdown pass to make the score 24-14.
SMU countered on the next drive with another Buechele passing touchdown, this time a 10-yarder to Kylen Granson, to make the score 31-14.
With under two minutes left in the third, CB Harrison Hand picked off a fourth down pass to give the Owls the ball back. However, this play was mitigated by a fumble on the next play to give SMU the ball back. Temple's defense held strong despite the Mustangs getting the ball back inside the redzone. SMU was forced to kick of a field goal and missed a 26 yarder to keep the score 31-14 at the end of the third quarter.
Temple capitalized on the missed field goal with its longest drive of the day. Russo connected with WR Jadan Blue for 11-yards and 36-yards consecutively to get the Owls to the one yardline. Russo finished the drive off with a one-yard keeper to make the score 31-21 with 13 minutes to play.
On the following drive, Buechele hit Roberson for a 60-yard touchdown, his third of the day, to make it 38-21.
The Mustangs tacked on another touchdown with seven minutes to play to make the score 45-21 and that would be the final score.
