Volleyball Sweeps Wichita State

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple volleyball team recorded a well-earned 3-0 sweep over visiting Wichita State on Sunday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. The Owls snapped a four-match skid, grabbing the win, 25-19, 25-13, 25-23, to improve to 11-10 overall, 2-8 in conference play.
Keys to the Match
> Temple had its best offensive performance in conference play, hitting .333 for the match, holding Wichita State to a .136 attack.
> Temple also out-dug the Shockers, 48-40, while blocks were even at six each.
> After a slow start, Temple took control of set one, using a long run midway through the action take it, 25-19.
> Set two saw the Owls hit a match-best .481, while the Shockers managed just .083, as Temple went up 2-0 with a lopsided 25-13 frame.
> Temple held a slim lead most of the final frame, until a late 21-21 tie. The Owls rebounded, however, grabbing the final points they needed to complete the sweep.
Individual Highlights
> Three players notched 12 or more kills for the Owls, led by 15 from sophomore Peyton Boyd, who hit .565 for the match.
> Sophomore Miray Bolukbasi tallied 13 kills, hitting .308, while senior Dana Westfield notched 12, with a .348 attack.
> Running the offense was sophomore Tyler Lindgren with 33 assists, while junior Selina Merfol chipped in with nine.
> Junior Averi Salvador again led all players on defense, tallying 16 digs, while junior Katerina Papazoglou added eight.
> Rounding out the box score, freshman Naomi Janetzke had four kills on just eight swings, while classmate Kayla Spells had a team-best four blocks, one solo.
Set One: Temple 25, Wichita State 19
> Temple shrugged off a slow start that saw the Shockers jump out to a 5-1 lead.
> The Owls defense stepped up and hot serving from sophomore Xeryah Salanoa saw Temple go on a pair of long runs to turn a 14-9 deficit into a 19-16 lead.
> Wichita State got the Temple lead below three just once more, as the Owls finished out set one, 25-19.
Set One: Temple 25, Wichita State 13
> After three early ties, Temple used a 6-1 run to jump out to a 14-7 advantage in set two.
> The Shockers scored three unanswered to cut it to 14-10, but Temple pushed on, with another surge, this time 5-2, to go up 19-12.
> Wichita State scored the next point, but that would be its final one of the frame, as the Owls closed the set with six straight points, five on kills, one on a block.
Set One: Temple 25, Wichita State 23
> The final set was the closest, as each team hit better than .300.
> Wichita State had the early advantage, but Temple quickly tied it at 6-6.
> Three more ties ensued before Temple pushed its lead to 14-10.
> With Temple up 17-12, Wichita State rallied to cut it to 19-18, before Temple answered with a kill.
> The teams traded sideouts until the Owls got kills from Boyd and Bolukbasi to go up 24-22.
> Wichita State spoiled the first set point, but Temple answered with an emphatic kill from Westfield to seal the set, match, and sweep.
