Winning: The Only Stat on Quinton Rose’s Mind
10.31.19 | Men's Basketball
First Team Preseason All-Conference, Philadelphia Big Five Second Team, and over 1,000 career points are just a few of the accomplishments that Temple Basketball senior Quinton Rose has compiled during his first three years on Broad Street. Yet, he heads into his senior year with motivation to achieve much higher. In terms of the goals he has set for 2019-2020, the common theme is a success for his team.
Rose has said making the NCAA Tournament is the proudest he's been in the Cherry and White. He also cited wins against Houston and Davidson as a top achievement. Rose made little to no mention of his individual accolades because for him, the team comes first.
The 6-8 guard, who has scored 1,353 points over his first three seasons, has been a major piece of the Owls roster every year since his arrival. He made the All-Conference Rookie team during his freshman campaign when he became the first Temple freshman to average double figures (10.1 ppg) since Mark Tyndale (2004-05). That same year, he was invited to the Men's U19 World Cup Team tryout camp and still, his team's victories are what he will remember the most.
The Owls have named three team captains for the upcoming season and of them, Rose is the only senior. This is now his locker room and his team. But growing into the role of team leader came with a learning curve.
"I came in as a freshman and learned from guys I looked up to like Obi Enechionyia, Josh Brown, and Shizz Alston, Jr.," said Rose.
Even leadership is a trait that Rose gives thanks to his teammates. Rose said he credits his teammates for giving him the confidence to lead them.
As the season grows closer, the team's focus is not on past achievement but achieving goals that this team has not had in recent history. Rose points to the loss in the NCAA Tournament as one of the most painful moments of his career and looks forward to hopefully getting back in order to get the right result.
The nod to the Preseason All-Conference Team is something that Rose appreciates, but the results that come from the team are all that matters. The goal is for the hype to live up to reality.
The goal this year is to win at all levels of the season.
"It's all about winning," Rose said. "We want to go out and show everyone that we are the hardest working team out there."
The team hopes not just to make it back to the NCAA Tournament, but to make a run.
"Every year someone has to do it, so why not us?" Rose said.
With high motivation, the individual goals are high, but Rose, who currently ranks ninth on Temple's career steals list (169), was clear in saying his team's success means individual success.
"With my team behind me, I can see myself as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year," added Rose.
Rose and the Owls will open their season on November 5th against the Drexel Dragons. With one last run to leave his mark on the Temple history books, Rose is excited to work as hard as ever for what should be an exciting season.
