Volleyball Travels to Cincinnati/East Carolina this Weekend

10.31.19 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team begins a stretch of four straight road matches, beginning with a trip to Cincinnati on Friday night (7:00 p.m.) and then East Carolina on Sunday afternoon (12:00 p.m.) The Owls are coming off a 1-1 weekend, recording a home split against Tulsa (L, 0-3) and Wichita State (W, 3-0).

OWL ABOUT TEMPLE
> Temple is 11-10 overall, including a 2-8 mark in conference play.
> Sophomores Gem Grimshaw and Peyton Boyd lead the Owls with 2.90 kills per set, while Boyd tops the team with a .319 attack.
> Junior Katerina Papazoglou adds 2.79 kills per set, while the outside hitter also ranks second on the Owls with 2.95 digs per frame.
> Sophomore Miray Bolukbasi (2.32 kills/set) and senior Dana Westfield (2.12 kills/set) bolster the Owls' varied attack.
> Sophomore Tyler Lindgren is the primary setter, dishing out 9.24 assists/set.
> At the net, freshman Kayla Spells leads Temple with 0.83 blocks per set, while junior Baleigh Jean-Philippe contributes 0.78 per frame.
> Defensively, junior Averi Salvador tops the Owls with 4.90 digs per set.
> Temple's offense hits .220, while opponents hit .205 against the Owls.
> Individually, Salvador ranks third in the conference in digs per set while Lindgren is fourth in assists per set.

SCOUTING CINCINNATI
> Cincinnati is 18-5 overall and 9-1 in conference play. The Bearcats have won four in a row since suffering a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Tulane on October 18.
> Cincinnati is led by Jordan Thompson, two-time All-American, and US Senior National Team member. Thompson averages 6.22 kills per set, leading the nation in the category. She adds a team-high 37 aces with 2.78 digs per set to her all around game.
> Flanking Thompson on offense is Maria Mallon who tallies 3.76 kills per set.
> Armania Heckenmueller leads the Pirates and the American Athletic Conference with 11.70 assists per set, which ranks her second in the nation.
> On defense, Mackenzie Conner tops the team with 3.50 digs per set, while Mallon adds 2.92 per frame.
> Cincinnati hits .285 as a team to lead the American, while opponents hit .231 against the Bearcats.

TEMPLE VS. THE BEARCATS
> Temple is 9-6 all-time against Cincinnati, with the Bearcats winning the earlier match-up this season, 3-0, in Philadelphia.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Cincinnati 3, Temple 0 (10/13/19)
> Cincinnati topped Temple, 3-0, picking up a 25-17, 25-16, 25-12 win to move to 14-4 overall, 6-0 in conference play.
> Temple couldn't get things going on offense against a well-rounded Cincinnati team, led by NCAA kills leader Jordan Thompson who tallied 19 kills and 10 digs.
> The Bearcats out-hit Temple .301 to .116, while holding a 59-38 advantage in digs.
> Temple freshman Naomi Janetzke and sophomores Gem Grimshaw and Miray Bolukbasi tied for the team lead in kills with five.

SCOUTING ECU
> East Carolina enters Friday's match-up with a 16-8 overall record, 3-7 in conference play.
> The Pirates are coming off a non-conference win at NC Central (3-1) on Tuesday, after falling to SMU (1-3) and Memphis (2-3) over the weekend.
> ECU is led offensively by outside hitter Sydney Kleinman (3.55 kills/set) and right side Bri Wood (3.21 kills/set) who have both passed the 300 kill mark already far this season.
> Shelby Martin (6.33 assists/set) and Marissa Harmon (4.54 assists/set) run the offense to the tune of a .239 attack, which ranks third in the conference.
> Brandee Markwith leads the Pirates' defense with 4.41 digs per set, while at the net, Toya Osuegbu tops the team with 0.97 blocks per set, 71 total.
> Opponents hit .205 against the Pirates.

TEMPLE VS. THE PIRATES
> Temple is 7-1 all-time against the Pirates, with Temple claiming the earlier meeting this season in Philadelphia.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Temple 3, ECU 1 (10/11/19)
> Temple picked up a 3-1 victory over visiting East Carolina, snapping a six game skid, 25-21, 26-28, 25-22, 25-13 .
> Temple hit a stout .289, holding ECU to a .189 attack.
> After the teams traded the first two sets, Temple won the final two to seal the home court victory.
> Three players tallied double-doubles in the Owls' victory, led by 51 assists and 11 digs from Tyler Lindgren.
Naomi Janetzke racked up 16 kills with 14 assists, while Katerina Papazoglou notched 16 kills and 11 digs.
> For ECU, Sydney Kleinman tallied 19 kills, while Bri Wood added 17.
