Volleyball Falls in Hard Fought Match to UConn on School Day

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple volleyball team dropped a hard fought 3-1 match to UConn on Friday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. The Owls won the first set, 25-21, but the Huskies took the final three, 25-16, 25-20, 27-25. The Owls move to 9-5 overall, 0-3 in conference play, while UConn is 8-7 overall, 2-1 in the American.
Keys to the Match
> Temple got off to a fast start in front of a loud "School Day" crowd. The Owls built up a big lead and held on for a 25-21 win to go up 1-0.
> UConn made some adjustments in the second set, hitting a match-high .344 to tie the contest at 1-1.
> The Huskies then came away with two tight wins in the third and fourth, including a nail biting 27-25 fourth set, to take the match.
> UConn hit .248 to Temple's .176, while also holding a 13-4 advantage on the block.

> Junior Katerina Papazoglou smashed her career high with 22 total kills, she also added 11 digs to complete a double-double.
> Senior Dana Westfield finished with eight kills, while sophomore Gem Grimshaw added seven with nine digs.
> Sophomore Tyler Lindgren tallied 32 assists and nine digs with junior Selina Merfol notching 10 assists and seven digs.
> Junior Averi Salvador captained the defense, finishing the match with 22 digs.
> Rounding out the box score, freshman Naomi Janetzke had five kills, while junior Baleigh Jean-Philippe paced Temple with three blocks.
Set One: Temple 25, UConn 21
> Temple won six of the first seven points, en route to an early 12-5 advantage.
> UConn battled back to cut it to three at 13-10, but the Owls got timely hitting from Papazoglou to remain in control.
> The Huskies finally broke through late with a 6-1 run to put them up 19-18. Temple responded with a surge of its own, winning seven of the final nine points to take it, 25-21.
Set Two: UConn 25, Temple 16
> Temple struggled to find its footing on offense in the second, as UConn had an early 11-6 edge.
> The Owls closed it to four, but a 4-0 Huskies' run opened the lead to 15-7.
> Temple got no closer the rest of the way, as UConn tied the match at 1-1 with a convincing 25-16 win.
Set Three: UConn 25, Temple 20
> Another hot start from the Huskies set the tone early in the third set, as UConn went up 8-3 early.
> Temple began chipping away, and used a 5-0 surge midway through the action to take its first lead at 15-14.
> Three more ties followed, but in the end, it was UConn that scored when they needed to, as the Huskies sealed the win with a 4-2 closing run.
Set Four: UConn 27, Temple 25
> Temple had the hot hand to start the fourth, going up 7-1 to open the action.
> UConn closed the gap to two at 8-6, and then stayed within striking distance of the Owls.
> With Temple up 16-13, UConn put together a 6-0 run to take a 19-16 lead.
> Temple battled back to tie the frame six more times, including spoiling three set points, but UConn got the final two points of the set to take it 27-25, and the match, 3-1.
