St. Joseph’s Hands Women's Basketball First Loss of the Season

PHILADELPHIA - A tight game came down to the final seconds, but St. Joseph's came out on top over Temple women's basketball in a Big 5 contest Monday evening at Michael J. Hagan Arena. The win pushes the Hawks to a 2-0 start, while the Owls fall to 2-1.
Keys to the Game
> Temple outshot the Hawks 25-15 in the second quarter and 21-20 in the fourth quarter. However, St. Joseph's finished with a 38.8% field goal percentage and held the Owls to 31.7% from the floor.
> The Hawks saw four players collect double-digit points with three connecting from long-range.
> St. Joe's held a slight 38-37 edge on the boards.
> Temple remained within two points thanks to a jump shot in the paint from Mackins with five seconds to go, but two good free throws from SJU's Katie Jekot gave the Hawks a four-point lead that the Owls could not come back from.
> Foul shots proved to be the difference in tonight's matchup as the Hawks finished 87.1% from the line while Temple shot 65.6%.
Individual Highlights
> Junior Mia Davis collected a game-high 29 points after shooting 8-for-18 from the floor and 12-for-16 at the foul line.
> Redshirt sophomore Ashley Jones registered 16 points and a career-high seven rebounds for the Owls. Jones finished the night with an 87.5% free throw percentage after knocking down 7-of-8.
> Marissa Mackins led Temple in the assist column with three. The sophomore added six points and four rebounds.
First Quarter
> The Owls struggled in the first quarter, putting up just five points and shooting 25% from the floor.
> Temple was held to just one bucket for almost eight minutes before freshman Asonah Alexander was fouled on a made basket to break the scoreless streak.
> St. Joseph's held the edge on the boards, out-rebounding Temple 11-7.
Second Quarter
> The Owls outshot SJU 25-13 in the second quarter to bring themselves back into the game.
> Mackins worked to cut the deficit after making one-of-two free throws and knocking down one from beyond the arc to open the frame.
> Temple went on an 11-2 over the span of four minutes to cut the lead to two before Nailah Delinois hit back-to-back threes to put the Hawks up by seven.
> The Owls then used an 8-0 run over the last three minutes of the half to head into the locker room with a 30-28 lead.
Third Quarter
> The third quarter started off slow with the Hawks outscoring Temple 7-3 in the first six and a half minutes.
> The final four minutes turned into a back-and-forth free throw battle and St. Joseph's extended their lead to seven following two good foul shots by Mary Sheehan in the final minute of the stanza.
Fourth Quarter
> SJU opened the final 10 minutes with a 7-2 run before freshman Asonah Alexander picked off a pass that ended with a good jumper by Davis.
> Jones started a 8-0 run for the Owls with a big-time three to bring Temple within one point with 1:42 remaining.
> Despite jumpers from Davis, Shantay Taylor and Mackins to keep the Owls within two points of St. Joe's, the Hawks went 11-for-12 from the charity stripe in the final two minutes in order to walk away with the win.
