Alston and Rose Lead Men's Basketball Past Tulsa 84-73 for Owls' 20th Win
2.23.19 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Shizz Alston, Jr. scored 24 points and Quinton Rose put up 23 points in leading Temple to an 84-73 win over Tulsa (16-12, 6-9) and avenge the Owls' loss to the Golden Hurricane just two weeks ago. The victory puts Temple at 20-7 overall (10-4 in the American Athletic Conference), giving head coach Fran Dunphy his ninth 20-win season in 13 years with the Owls.
Game Summary
> After shooting a season-low 30 percent in an 18-point loss at Tulsa on Feb. 9, Temple truly turned things around and shot almost 51 percent overall.
> The Owls shot nearly 59 percent in the second half, keeping them ahead of the Golden Hurricane who saw a huge improvement from the first half (29.6 percent) and shot 53.6 percent.
> Rose helped set the tone early, scoring seven straight points in a 12-0 run that gave Temple a lead in the opening three minutes that the Owls would not relinquish.
> The hot shooting came in stretches for Temple, which also went cold in the latter half of the first period and allowed Tulsa to cut a 10-point lead down to just one.
> The Golden Hurricane were within five points midway through the second half, but a 12-2 Owl run gave them their largest lead of 17 points with 4:23 to go.
Individual Highlights

> Rose made 7-of-7 at the line and scored 13 of his 23 points in the Owls' big second half.
> Nate Pierre-Louis scored 13 points in his 21st double-figure scoring performance of the year.
> Coming up big off the bench was Justyn Hamilton who hit 4-of-5 and scored 10 points.
> The Owls' leader on the glass was Damion Moore with six rebounds including four in a key early stretch of the second half that reestablished the Owls' lead.
First Half
> Rose had the hot hand early, hitting 3-for-3 and helping the Owls on a 12-0 run that gave them their first 10-point lead, 15-5 at 15:51.
> After matching that 10-point advantage twice more, the last at 20-10 near the midway point of the half, Temple went cold.
> The Owls were just 1-for-12 over a stretch that saw Tulsa cut the margin to two points at 20-18.
> An 8-0 run gave Temple some cushion back at 26-18 with 5:28 to go, but the Owls got just one field goal the rest of the way.
> The Golden Hurricane hit 6-of-6 at the line in an 8-2 closing run that put them within a point, 31-30 at halftime.
> Despite the Owls' struggles, they finished the half shooting 40.7 percent while holding Tulsa to 29.6 percent
Second Half

> Alston hit 3-of-4 including a pair of long range buckets for a 57-49 Temple lead at 11:31.

> Rose scored six of the final eight Owl points in the run which put Temple on top by 17, 78-61 with 4:23 left.
> Tulsa fought to get within 11 in the final minutes, but could get no closer.
