2.26.19 | Men's Golf

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Senior Trey Wren picked up where he left off, shooting a four-under 140 to lead the 14th Annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Monday.  Wren's play helped Temple top the 19-team field by one stroke over Furman after the first 36-holes at the 6,913-yard, par-72, Wexford Plantation Course.
Recapping the Day
  • Wren, who entered the day with a team-best 71.33 stroke average, shot a one-under 71 for his morning round and followed that with a three-under 69.    He tied for the tournament high with nine birdies on the day and his eagle two on the 16th hole of his second round was one of only four eagles on the day.
  • Senior John Barone shot a three-over 147 for the day to tie for 13th overall in the 95-player field.  He led the Owls with 24 pars over the 36 holes and also made five birdies.
  • Freshman Conor McGrath and senior Gary McCabe were next for the Owls with six over 150s.  McGrath was looking for an even better finish than his 27th place showing, but dropped four strokes with an untimely eight on his final hole of the day.  McCabe had six birdies on the day.
The Field
  • Temple turned in an 11-over 587 score for the day, one stroke better than Furman (588) and four-shots better than Davidson (591).
  • Looking for his first career win, Wren is two shots ahead of Memphis' Brad Bawden (-2).  The Tigers are in fourth place, six shots behind the Owls.
Next
  • Play resumes Tuesday with one final round commencing with a shotgun start at 8:15 am.
