Dunphy Finalist for Prosser Award

Fran Dunphy Named Finalist for Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award

3.13.19 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Temple University men's basketball head coach Fran Dunphy has been named a finalist for the 2019 Skip Prosser Man of the Year award.  Named after the late Skip Prosser, who died suddenly in 2007 while the head coach at Wake Forest, the award is presented annually to those who not only achieve success on the basketball court but who also display moral integrity off of it as well.

Dunphy, in his 13th and final season as the Owls' head coach, earlier this year received the Dean Smith Award presented by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Good Guy Award, and has been honored by many of Temple's opponents during this season for his contributions to the sport.

The all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history with 580 victories, Dunphy has led Temple to nine postseason appearances, including seven trips to the NCAA Tournament.  In his 13 seasons at the Owls' helm, he has compiled a 270-160 overall record.  He has led the Cherry and White to three conference championships and three regular season titles.

This year, Temple heads to the American Athletic Conference Championships with a 23-8 overall record, and a 13-5 league mark,  The Owls defeated two ranked teams, #21/17 Houston (73-69 on Jan. 9) and #25/rv UCF (67-62 on Mar. 9) to mark the 12th straight season that Dunphy has led the Owls to a win over a nationally-ranked opponent. Temple is the third seed in the league tournament and next plays Friday at 9 pm ET against the winner of the #6 Wichita State/#11 ECU game.

Prior to his arrival at Temple, Dunphy compiled a 310-163 record in 17 seasons at the Penn while taking the Quakers to nine NCAA Tournaments. A 1970 La Salle University graduate, Dunphy is the all-time winningest coach at Penn and ranks third on Temple's all-time coaching win list.

Dunphy is also just the fifth coach to win 200 at two different Division I programs while also taking both schools to six or more NCAA Tournaments.  He is joined by Lou Henson (New Mexico, Illinois), Rick Pitino (Kentucky, Louisville), Eddie Sutton (Arkansas, Oklahoma State) and Roy Williams (Kansas, North Carolina) in this elite club.

A full-time educator on and off the court, Dunphy is in his 12th year teaching in Temple's prestigious Fox School of Business. He team-teaches an honors course with Dr. Lynne Anderson, entitled, Management, Theory & Practice: From the Locker Room to the Board Room. He previously had served as a lecturer in the Wharton Executive Education program and in the management department of the Wharton School.

One of the leaders in the local Coaches vs. Cancer campaign, Dunphy was named to the National Council of Coaches vs. Cancer. He was also honored as the 2002 National Coaches vs. Cancer Coach of the Year for his service and tireless dedication to those in need.

The Owl mentor also devotes time to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Philadelphia's Board of Directors, and his Penn and Temple teams have participated in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program each year. He is also a member of the Philadelphia CYO Hall of Fame.

The recipient of the 2019 Skip Prosser award will be announced on April 5 at the College Insider Awards Event, in Minneapolis, site of the 2019 NCAA division I basketball championship.
