Gymnastics Wins First Ever ECAC Championship in Record-Setting Fashion

3.23.19 | Women's Gymnastics

ITHACA, N.Y.—Temple women's gymnastics (19-14, 8-1 ECAC) made program history in more ways than one this afternoon, as the team won its first ever ECAC Championship, set a new beam program record and had three gymnasts and two coaches win ECAC awards. The Owls posted a 194.75 to take the title, defeating Yale (194.4), Penn (193.925), Cornell (193.3), Brown (192.225) and William & Mary (192.025).

Vault
> Temple opened up the meet on vault, scoring a 48.625.
> Freshman Jackie Terpak was solid for the Owls, posting a 9.7.
> Junior Jazmyn Estrella and freshman Ariana Castrence were impressive as well, each earning a 9.75.
> Junior Jaylene Everett scored a huge 9.8 to earn second place in the event.

Bars
> After a bye, Temple continued the competition on bars, earning a 48.05
> Castrence and sophomore Tori Edwards were strong for team, scoring a 9.75 and 9.775, respectively.
> Junior Daisy Todd led off the event for the Owls, tying her season-best with a 9.8 and tying for third place.

Beam 
> The Owls scored a program record 49.225 on their third event of the afternoon, smashing their previous record of 49.05.
> The squad was stellar from start to finish on beam, beginning with freshman Taylor Newland and sophomore Jordyn Oster. Newland tied her career-best with a 9.725 and Oster set a new career-best with a 9.825.
> Junior Jazmyn Estrella's strong routine earned a 9.8. Castrence set a new career-best and sophomore Delaney Garin tied her career-best, each earning a 9.85.
> Sophomore Monica Servidio anchored the Owls with a superb 9.9, tying her career-best and earning the ECAC beam title.

Floor
> Following another bye, Temple earned a 48.85 on its final event of the afternoon to secure the ECAC title.
> Sophomore Erica Fuchs led off the lineup for the Owls with a 9.8 and Everett followed with a 9.75.
> Castrence and senior India Anderson both put on dazzling routines, each scoring a 9.825.

All-Around
> Castrence and Servidio competed in the all-around for the Owls. Servidio took fourth place with a 38.2. Castrence won the ECAC all-around title, posting a career-best 39.175.

From the Coach
> "The team has been resilient all year," said head coach Josh Nilson. "Winning the conference championship for the first time in school history took the whole team! We overcame some mistakes on the uneven bars and roared back to beat the school record on beam. We scored nearly a point higher on beam this week than we did last week. I couldn't be more proud of this team and the staff. We are happy to be bringing the conference trophy back to Temple!"
