4.21.19 | Men's Golf

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Seniors Gary McCabe and Trey Wren shot even par 71s to help Temple tie for fourth place after the first round of play at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship, presented by Air Force Reserve Sunday.  The Owls are six shots behind first round leader SMU and tied with UCF with a plus-seven at the par-71, 7,125-yard Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club.

Recapping the Day
  • McCabe, who has been hot of late, led the Owls with four birdies on the day.  After playing the first nine at +2, he made three birdies on the final nine holes to pull to even par. It was his fourth at par of below round in his last six.  He is tied with Wren for seventh place
  • Wren was consistent throughout his round, playing even on both nines while making par on 13 holes.  After moving to one-under with a birdie on his first hole of the back nine, he slipped up on six, his 15th hole of the day, with a double bogey.  He regrouped to birdie the final hole.
  • Redshirt senior John Barone started slowly with bogeys on two of his first three holes and ended the same with bogeys on two of his final four.  He was able birdie twice and finished at with a three-over 74 to tie for 22nd.
  • Redshirt junior Erik Reisner, who led the Owls for most of the day, was three-under through eight holes, but stumbled down the stretch.  After bogeying his ninth hole, he posted a six-over for his back nine to finish with a four-over 75 and tied for 25th.
  • Freshman Conor McGrath rounded out the Temple team with a five-over 76 to tie for 36th.
The Field
  • SMU, ranked 37th in the nation, leads the field with a one-over 285.  The Mustangs are followed by Memphis (286), USF (290), Temple (291), UCF (291), Wichita State (292), Cincinnati (296), UConn (297), Houston (297) and ECU (299).
  • SMU sophomore Mac Meissner leads the field with a five-under 66.  USF freshman Albin Bergstrom is three shots back (69) and in second place.
Quotable
  • Head coach Brian Quinn on the day: "It was a very disappointing finish.  The way we played we were in a good spot.  Trey stepped up at the end.  Gary stepped up.  He doubled the first hole of the day and then hung in and played fantastic to continue his great play.  He has been hitting it real solid.  That was the glue there today.
  • Barone played real well. He did not putt great, got a little down on himself which led to a couple of mistakes that ended up costing us a little bit.  Erik got out gangbusters but then struggled down the stretch hitting the golf ball.  He just did not have his game the last nine."
  • Quinn on team's chances: "We did not quite shoot ourselves in the foot, but we should be five to seven shots better.  That is tough to give away in the first round, especially in this conference with some of the great teams we are competing against.  I look forward to tomorrow and I think we are going to have a really good day."

Next Round
  • Temple is paired with four-time defending champion USF Monday with the teams teeing off from hole one at 8:13 am.
