Dunphy Wanamaker Award

Fran Dunphy to Receive the John Wanamaker Award

4.26.19 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Another day, another award for Fran Dunphy.   The former Temple head men's basketball coach will be recognized with the John Wanamaker Athletic Award and his good friend and long-time Philadelphia Phillies executive David Montgomery will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the John Wanamaker Athletic Award Luncheon held at the Wanamaker Building's Crystal Tea Room on June 11.

Dunphy, who was named Philadelphia Big 5 Coach of the Year and inducted into the organization's Hall of Fame on April 15, guided Temple to 270 wins in his 13-year tenure, including a 23-10 record and NCAA berth this season.  Earlier this year he received the Gene Bartow Award for his contributions to the game, the Dean Smith Award presented by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Good Guy Award.

The all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history with 580 victories, Dunphy led Temple to 10 postseason appearances, including eight trips to the NCAA Tournament.  In his 13 seasons at the Owls' helm, he compiled a 270-162 overall record.  He led the Cherry and White to three conference championships and three regular season titles.

Dunphy, whose decorated basketball career began as a player at La Salle University ('70), has been a long-time ambassador for Philadelphia, serving as a leader in a number of national volunteer initiatives like Coaches vs. Cancer.

"I am truly humbled to be presented with this prestigious honor," said Dunphy. "I want to thank not only the Wanamaker Award committee that thought highly enough of my achievements to recognize me, but all of my student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have allowed me to do what I have done throughout the course of my career.  It has always been about them."

Since 1961, the John Wanamaker Athletic Award has highlighted athletes, teams and coaches that embody the spirit of Philadelphia during a given year. The award is presented by PHL Sports, a business development division of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB), in conjunction with the Wanamaker Office Building, CBS3, and the Philadelphia Daily News. It celebrates an "athlete, team or organization that has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia during a given year."

Montgomery began his Phillies career in 1971, selling season and group tickets. He acquired an ownership interest in the team in 1994 and succeeded Bill Giles as general partner in 1997. He served in that role until 2014, and has been Phillies' chairman since 2015. Montgomery's impact on the Philadelphia community and the sport of baseball are legendary. At the announcement of the 2026 Major League Baseball All-Star Game last week, Commissioner Rob Manfred called Montgomery a "mentor" and "one of my best friends in baseball".

"David means so much for so many people in this city," said PHLCVB President and CEO Julie Coker Graham. "We've been honored to have him serve as Chairman of PHL Sports' Advisory Board for the last 10 years. He's had a huge impact in terms of our efforts to convene the entire Philadelphia sports community and bring major events to our city through the years, and it's because of the great warmth and intelligence he brings to everything he does."

The Robert P. Levy Community Service Award winner, Give and Go Athletics, provides therapeutic and athletic programs designed to promote health, human development, teamwork, and informal learning. Founded in 2009 by Caleb Jones and Andre Wright, the non-profit brings structured programming and emotional support to youth in North Philadelphia. Exemplifying the award's definition to "improve the quality of life in Philadelphia through sports", the organization has created permanent, positive change for its community.

Presented by the City of Philadelphia's Parks & Recreation Department, the seventh annual Sports Volunteer of the Year Award will recognize Jayhawks Youth Association President and Founder Andre Crews. For more than 40 years, Crews has coached youth basketball in the region, teaching life skills to kids who have gone on to earn college scholarships and degrees. Based in the Kingsessing neighborhood, Crews organizes recreation leagues and helps community members develop resumes and apply for job opportunities.

PHL Sports, the Wanamaker Office Building, CBS3, and the Philadelphia Daily News present the Wanamaker Athletic Award ceremony and luncheon. The public participated in the nomination process via ballots in the Philadelphia Daily News and online during April. The Wanamaker Selection Committee, consisting of a cross-section of sports and media representatives, made the final decision.
