Cross Country and Track & Field Alum Bill Mahoney's OwlSports Summer Series Feature
7.2.19 | Men's Cross Country, Men's Track and Field
For this year's Summer Series, Temple Athletics is highlighting a handful of alumni in profile stories that feature their accomplishments in life after their time at the University. These individuals have taken the time to share their experiences and memories from Temple and reflect on their involvement as a student-athlete.
Our latest feature of the series is cross country and track & field alumnus Bill Mahoney ('68).
When you think back on your time at Temple, what do you recall most vividly?
Thinking back on my time at Temple, I most vividly recall receiving a first class education- Bachelors BBA and Masters MBA, having a great coach/mentor in Gavin White, Sr., and my teammates, who still keep in touch with one another 50 years later.
Talk about your post-Temple professional career. What position(s) did you hold and what was the path you took to get there?
After Temple, I worked for 3M for 33 years. I became a Vice President in Human Resources with Global Responsibility and worked directly with the CEO of the company. During this time, I completed multiple U.S. assignments and spent five years living in Belgium.
How did Temple University, and in specific Temple Cross Country and Track & Field prepare you for life after graduation?ÂTemple provided me with the opportunity to prepare for life after an education. Track & Cross Country gave me a great foundation by helping me be not only an accomplished individual but also a part of a team, planning for an outcome, and executing that vision into reality.
Temple provided me with all the critical elements of success in life and the business world.
What accomplishment are you most proud of and why?
I am most proud of being the first college graduate in my family, attaining All-American status in both Track and Cross Country, captaining championship teams, and being elected to the Temple Sports Hall of Fame. All of these took a focused dedication to achieving a result as well as the help of many other people along the way. It's about the "us," not the "me."
What advice would you give to current student-athletes?
Advice that I would give to current student-athletes would be to realize that you will face many of the same joys and disappointments of athletic competition in your life's journey, but you are building some strong foundational traits for life success afterwards. Also, I would give the advice to maximize your experiences now. As you look back on them in the future, you will feel great about having devoted yourself to the combined life of a student-athlete.
