PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's soccer team (1-3-1, 0-0 AAC) dropped a 3-0 decision to the Villanova Wildcats (3-2-1, 0-0 Big East) on Sunday afternoon at the Temple Sports Complex. A strong second half fueled by three goals led the Wildcats to victory.
How it Happened
> The Owls held the Wildcats scoreless for the entirety of the first half, battling for possession to deny them any chances on net. Villanova created the first real opportunity of the game in the eighth minute of action, when Niki Molina sent a ball on frame but was denied by senior goalkeeper Morgan Basileo.
> Temple created one of its best chances in the first half in the 25th minute of play off a corner kick by junior Marissa DiGenova. Lofting the ball into the 18, the Owls were able to collect it and fire off a shot from the boot of junior Natalie Druehl. Sending the ball on frame, the junior was denied the chance by Villanova goalkeeper Hensley Hancuff.
> Villanova reset in the locker room at halftime and came out ready to battle for the second 45 minutes of game action. The Wildcats got on the board first in the 53rd minute when they were able to collect a scrambled ball in the Temple goal box. Brice McInroy was able to get on the end of the action, collecting the assist from Kristin Barbour.
> Less than three minutes later, the Wildcats found themselves in Temple's defensive third once again. Villanova's Brice McInroy found the back of the net again to put the Wildcats ahead, 2-0, off assists from Sam Rosette and Chloe O'Neill.
> The Wildcats sealed the deal in the 65th minute when O'Neill found the head of Allison Breed, who sent one in to the near post to extend the lead to three.
Match Notes
> Villanova was threatening offensively over the course of the game, firing off 19 shots with 10 on target compared to Temple's four shots, three on goal.
> Basileo came up huge for the Owls in net, posting seven saves and thwarting numerous dangerous opportunities from the starting whistle.
> It was a chippy match between the local Philly rivals that saw 24 fouls and four yellow cards.
> Freshman Mikaela Maughn saw her first action in the Cherry and White this afternoon, logging minutes on the back line for the Owls.
From the Coach
> "We had done well in the first half against a very strong team," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "I felt we did well containing them in the first 45 minutes and were able to create some opportunities. I'm disappointed in some simple mistakes we made that led to Villanova's three goals. We were competitive, but we didn't click on the attacking end of the field today."
