Gymnastics Opens Home Slate with Pink Meet Saturday

PHILADELPHIA—Temple gymnastics will compete in McGonigle Hall for the first time in 2020 on Saturday, Jan. 18 as the Owls host Cortland and SCSU for their Pink Meet. The competition is set to begin at 7 p.m. and the first 30 fans in the door will receive a Temple gymnastics class of 2023 mini poster.

The Owls
> The Owls are led by head coach Josh Nilson, who is in his second season leading the Cherry and White.
> Last time out, Temple posted a 192.55 in its season opener against Illinois and Lindenwood on Thursday, Jan. 12. Sophomore Ariana Castrence won the vault title took second place in the all-around competition. Illinois came out on top with a 194.675 and Lindenwood took second with a 192.675.
> The squad had its best performance of the evening on vault, recording a 48.575. Freshman Heidi Vanderboom competed for the first time in Cherry and White, starting the squad off with a 9.725. Junior Tori Edwards and freshman Madi Brooks both tallied scores of 9.65 through the middle of the lineup. Senior Jaylene Everett and sophomore Ariana Castrence were superb. Everett scored a 9.75 and Castrence anchored the team with a 9.8 to close out the meet and take first in the event.
> Castrence was named the ECAC Gymnast of the Week following her outstanding performance in the first meet of the 2020 campaign. The sophomore competed in the all-around for the Cherry and White, taking second place with a 39.125 (9.8- vault, 9.775- bars, 9.8- beam, 9.75- floor). Her performance on vault earned her the event title and helped propel Temple to its highest event score of the afternoon. The Waldorf, Md. native is ranked No.1 in the ECAC in the all-around.

Scouting Cortland
> Last time out, Cortland earned its first dual meet victory of the season over at Ursinus on Sunday, defeating the Bears 184.275-181.525.
> The team posted a 46.225 on vault, 45.575 on bars, 46.550 on beam and 45.925 on floor.
> This will be the fifth meeting between the Owls and the Red Dragons. Temple is an undefeated 4-0 in the all-time series.

Scouting SCSU
> SCSU opened its 2020 campaign on Sunday at Springfield with Yale and Brown. The Owls scored a 189.475 to take second.
> The squad scored a 47.150 on vault, 47.725 on bars, 46.775 on beam and 47.825 on floor.
> Temple holds a strong advantage in the all-time series against SCSU, leading 11-4. The teams last met in 2019 when Temple came out on top, 194.850-191.375.
