Women's Basketball Wins First Conference Game in OT at Tulsa

TULSA, Okla.Marissa Mackins poured in 25 points to lead the Owls for the second-straight game as the Temple women's basketball team slipped past Tulsa 74-65 in overtime Saturday at the Reynolds Center. The Owls improve to 8-6 this season and 1-1 in the American, while the Golden Hurricane fall to 5-9 on the year and 0-1 in conference play. 

Keys to the Game
> Temple rebounded from a slow first quarter in a close game that featured eight ties and 10 lead changes.
> The Owls led by as many as nine in the game, but Tulsa stayed within striking distance, including forcing overtime in the final seconds.
> In the extra session, Temple dominated, holding Tulsa to just five points to give the Owls their first conference victory of the year.
> For the game, Temple out-shot Tulsa, 43% to 37% while holding a 48-35 advantage on the boards.

Individual Highlights
> Mackins surpassed the 20-point mark for the second straight game, connecting for five threes.
> Junior Mia Davis notched a double-double on her birthday, racking up 19 points and 13 rebounds.
> Graduate student Lena Niang also tallied a double-double with 14 points and a career-best 12 boards
> Sophomore Alexa Williamson finished with eight points and eight boards, while rookie Asonah Alexander dished out eight assists.

First Quarter 
> The Owls opened the scoring when Jones dished to Mackins on the wing for a three. 
> After Elliott was fouled on a good layup and made the extra shot, Temple took a 9-3 following buckets from Davis and Jones. 
> Rebecca Lecsay tied the game at 3:55 mark with a jumper in the paint. 
> The Golden Hurricane ended the first frame on an 8-0 run, not allowing to make a shot in the final four and a half minutes. 

Second Quarter 
> Temple started the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take back the lead as Niang led the charge with two layups and a trey.  
> The Golden Hurricane answered with a run of their own, scoring seven unanswered points and putting themselves back ahead.
> After both teams traded the lead once again, Williamson worked to put the Owls back on top as she tied the game 27-27 with a layup. 
> However, Tulsa closed out the half with two good foul shots from Elliott and a three-pointer from Maddie Bittle to give Tulsa a 32-27 advantage as they headed into the locker room. 

Third Quarter
> Mackins began the third quarter with a three-pointer, cutting the lead 32-30. 
> Tulsa's Addison Richards answered on the other end with a long-range shot to extend the Golden Hurricane's lead. 
> Temple followed with an 11-3 run, capped off by a layup from Davis to give the Owls a 38-35 advantage.
> The lead changed hands twice more, with Tulsa going up 41-40 with under a minute to play, but a Williamson free throw knotted things at 41-41 after three.

Fourth Quarter
> Both teams traded threes to start the fourth quarter with another tie at 44-44.
> Mackins kept up her hot streak from beyond-the-arc draining three in first four minutes to spur an 8-1 run to put the Owls up 52-45.
> Tulsa whittled the Owls' advantage with a 10-3 run to again tie the game, this time at 55-55.
> After back and forth play down the stretch, Tulsa went up 58-56 with a free throw with 22 seconds remaining.
> Temple answered with four-straight Mackins points, but Tulsa tied it on a Gaulden lay-up with six seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime.

Overtime
> Temple dominated overtime session, outscoring the Hurricane, 14-5.
> Davis had six points in the frame, as the Owls opened with a 5-0 surge to go up 65-60.
> Tulsa closed the gap to four points twice in the overtime, but the Owls closed out the win with a three from Niang and two free throws from Mackins.
