Women’s Basketball Looks to Bounce Back at FGCU

PHILADELPHIA — Temple women's basketball will travel to Fort Myers, Fla. to take on Florida Gulf Coast for non-conference action on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m.

THE OWLS
> The Cherry and White enter their second game of the 2020-21 season at 0-1, falling to city rival Villanova in their season opener, 90-72.
> Friday's loss marked the first time since 2010 the Owls dropped their first game of the season. 
> Temple finished the 2019-20 season with a mark of 16-15 (7-9 AAC), finishing eighth in the American Athletic Conference.
> Senior standout Mia Davis has already racked up a number of preseason accolades this season as she has earned spots on both the 2020 Cheryl Miller Award Watch List and the 2020 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award Watch List while being tabbed the American Athletic Conference Preseason co-Player of the Year.
> Sophomore Asonah Alexander returns in the backcourt for the Owls. Alexander dished out 117 assists during her rookie year to average 3.7 per game. The 5-10 guard finished the season ranked 12th in the country with her 2.54 assist turnover ratio. 
> The Owls gained two stellar guards in Jasha Clinton and Kash Ayuso. Clinton was named the 2020 Virginia Girls Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 14.5 points, 4.8 assists, 3.9 steals and 2.7 rebounds per game for her Princess Anne High School team. Ayuso averaged 18 points, five rebounds and five assists per game and capped off her impressive senior year as the Palm Beach 7A-6A Sun Sentinel Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

LAST TIME OUT: Villanova 90, Temple 72
> In their first game back on the court since last season was cut short, Temple showed its rust, shooting just 41% from the field and connecting for just three from long range.
> Two large 11-0 Villanova runs in the first half set the tone, as the Wildcats led by 14 points at the half.
> A huge third quarter (33-17) for the visitors then put the game out of reach for Temple.
> The Owls had the edge in the fourth, but it was too late to finish a comeback.
> Villanova shot 51% from the field and had a 48-36 rebounding edge, as the Wildcats remained unbeaten on the season.
> Davis picked up where she left off last season, scoring 22 points and pulling down seven boards.
> Freshman Jasha Clinton and grad transfer Jada Graves each shined in their Temple debuts. Clinton scored 16 points, while Graves added 11 with five rebounds and three steals.
> Senior Emani Mayo had seven points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Asonah Alexander added six points and a game-high six assists.
> Rookie Kash Ayuso rounded out the box score with six points in her first collegiate game.

SCOUTING FGCU
> The Eagles enter Sunday's contest at 2-2 to start the year. 
> FGCU has faced tough competition in their opening two weeks, playing two top-ranked teams in #24 Missouri St. (L, 74-49) and #14 Arkansas (L, 86-80). 
> The Eagles have averaged 74.8 points per game over their first four games, ranking first in the ASUN Conference. 
> Tishara Morehouse averages 21.3 points per game across three games. Morehouse leads FGCU in field goal percentage (52.1%) and free throw percentage (81.8%).
> Guard Emma List is the second top scorer with 9.8 points per game while leading FGCU with 4.5 assists per contest. 
> Andrea Cecil, who has started all four games for the Eagles, leads the team with 6.0 boards per contest. 
> Kiersten Bell has only played in one game for the Eagles thus far, but the sophomore transfer registered an impressive double-double of 24 points and 20 rebounds in FGCU's last game. 

LAST TIME OUT: FGCU 84, Davidson 61
> After losing two-straight games against top-25 opponents, the Eagles won their third and final game of the Gulf Coast Showcase on Nov. 24 against Davidson, 84-61. 
> Bell led FGCU with her record-breaking performance of 24 points and 20 rebounds in her debut for the Eagles.
> Emma List registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists in the win. 
> FGCU outscored Davidson 24-9 in the first quarter to give them a comfortable lead after the first 10 minutes of action. 
> Despite outscoring the Eagles 23-15 in the third frame, Davidson was unable to claw their way back.
> Even though Bell pulled down 20 boards for the Eagles, Davidson was able to hold a 50-39 edge in the rebound column. 
> The Eagles ended the game shooting 46.4% (32-69) from the field and 35.4% (17-48) from three-point range. 

TEMPLE VS. FGCU
> FGCU leads 1-0 in the all-time series against Temple, as the Eagles won the first meeting between the two programs last season in Philadelphia. 

LAST TIME THEY MET: FGCU 93, Temple 67
> Temple fell 93-67 to FGCU on Dec. 22, 2019 at McGonigle Hall.  
FGCU tied this season's single game three-point record - previously set by them - with their 19 shots from beyond the arc. 
> The Eagles finished with a three-point shooting percentage of 40.4%, while the Owls shot 27.3% from long range. 
> Both teams shot over 40% from the field, with FGCU holding a slight 42.7% to 41.7% edge. 
> FGCU outrebounded Temple on the offensive end, 12-8, however both teams ended the game with 40 rebounds.  
> The Owls committed 15 turnovers as the Eagles collected 12 steals on their way to victory. 
> Davis finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth-straight double-double. 
> Lena Niang was the fourth Owl to score in double-digits with 14. Niang pulled down six rebounds and collected one steal, one block and one assist to round out her stat line.
> FGCU's Davion Wingate led all players with 31 points, hitting a game-high six three's.  
> Keri Jewett-Giles recorded a game-high nine assists for the Eagles.
