Women’s Basketball Rallies to Top Houston

PHILADELPHIA — Junior forward Mia Davis poured in a game-high 27 points as the Temple women's basketball team topped Houston 76-75 Saturday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. The Owls improved to 14-10 on the year and 6-5 in American Athletic Conference play while the Cougars dropped to 12-14 overall and 5-7 in the conference. 

Keys to the Game
> Houston took control of the first quarter, holding as much as a 16-point lead over Temple. 
> The Owls clawed their way back to outscore the Cougars in both the second and third quarters. 
> After trailing 38-33 at the half, Temple won the battle of the third quarter 26-18 as they took their first lead of the game. 
> Temple collected eight steals in the win, the most steals they've totaled against a conference opponent this season. 
> Houston held the edge in field goal percentage (47.5 to 46.4) and rebounds (34 to 33). 

Individual Highlights
> Davis shot 11-for-17 from the floor as she led all players in scoring. She added a team-high seven rebounds, one steal and a block to her stat line. 
> Redshirt-sophomore Ashley Jones added 22 points and a game-high eight assists, along with a pair of steals. 
> Graduate student Lena Niang was the final Owl to score in double figures with her 11 tallies. She added five assists, two blocks, two assists and a steal. 
> Sophomores Alexa Williamson and Marissa Mackins each added seven points to round out the box score. 

First Quarter 
> Houston opened the game with a 11-0 run, led by Dymond Gladney with five tallies of her own. 
> Davis finally put Temple on the board after three minutes of play with a layup assisted by Jones. 
> The Cherry and White ended the first frame on a 10-0 run as they chipped away at the Cougar's lead. 

Second Quarter 
> Temple extended their run into the second stanza as Jones knocked down a trey bring Temple within three points. 
> Houston responded with a 12-1 streak to once again take a comfortable lead with five minutes left until the break. 
> The Owls cut their deficit to five heading into the locker room thanks to a three-pointer from Mackins and a layup from Jones right before time expired. 

Third Quarter
> Temple cut their lead to one-point as Davis scored back-to-back buckets following the break. 
> However, two jumpers from Houston put the Cougars back up by five. 
> Davis then gave the Owls their first lead of the game as she was fouled on a made basket and completed the three-point play with the free throw. 
> Houston took back a one-point lead on a jumper by Blackshell-Fair with 5:20 to go in the quarter, but two foul shots from Williamson put Temple back on top. 
> Blackshell-Fair led the charge for the Cougars once again with the go-ahead layup for a one-point edge with two minutes left. 
> Jones answered with a crafty drive to the rim before an Alexander dish to Williamson put Temple up by three at the end of the third frame. 

Fourth Quarter
> Davis extended the momentum into the fourth quarter with a three-pointer. 
> With eight seconds on the clock, Gladney knocked down her second triple of the game to cut Temple's lead to two. 
> After Jones extended the Owls' lead to three with a good foul shot with six seconds remaining, the Cougars raced down the court and allowed Blackshell-Fair to make a layup at the buzzer but it wasn't the three-pointer needed to tie the game and send it into overtime.

> Temple heads next door to the Liacouras Center on Wednesday, Feb. 19 as they host Memphis for a 12 p.m. tip-off for their annual "School Day" game.
