Women’s Basketball to Play #9 ECU in First Round of AAC Tournament

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team will open the 2020 American Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon, taking on the ninth-seeded Pirates of ECU at 2 p.m. on ESPN3. The Owls finished the regular season in a tie for sixth place and have earned the eighth seed in the tournament.

THE OWLS
> Temple enters the 2020 American Athletic Conference Tournament with an overall record of 15-14, including 7-9 in conference action. 
> After starting conference play 4-0, the Owls went 3-8 in their last 11 American matchups as they closed the regular season on a four-game losing-streak.
> Junior Mia Davis leads Temple with 18.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. 
> A Cheryl Miller Award top 10 finalist, Davis totals 17 double-doubles on the season to tie for fifth-most in the nation. 
> Redshirt sophomore Ashley Jones adds 16.5 points, 4.5 boards and a team-best 4.2 assists per game. 
> Marissa Mackins is the third Owl to average double-digit points with 12.7 per night. Mackins leads Temple and ranks second in the American with 73 three-pointers on the year. 
> Graduate student Lena Niang is the second leading rebounder for Temple with 5.4 rebounds per game while adding 7.3 points each outing.
> Rounding out the box score is sophomore Alexa Williamson, who adds 6.0 points and 4.4 boards per contest. 
> As a team, Temple is shooting 40.1% from the floor and 31.4% from long range. 

SCOUTING ECU 
> #9 ECU enters the conference tournament with an overall mark of 9-20, including 6-10 in American play. 
> Lashonda Monk leads the Pirates with 14.7 points and 4.1 steals per game. 
> Monk holds both the ECU and American career steals record with 308 after just three seasons of play. Her steals per game ranks first in the conference and third in the nation.
> Taniyah Thompson adds 13.7 points per outing and is the only other Pirate to average double digits. 
> Dominque Claytor leads ECU on the boards with 6.2 rebounds per night. Claytor adds 7.2 points each game. 
> ECU leads the American and ranks second in the country with 397 total steals. 

TEMPLE VS. ECU
> Temple leads 6-2 in the all-time series against the Pirates. 
> The first meeting between the two programs came on Feb. 28, 2015 where the Owls topped ECU 79-69 at McGonigle Hall. 
> That same season, Temple suffered their lone loss to ECU on Mar. 7 in the first round of the American tournament, 77-71.
> The Pirates handed the Owls their second loss of the series on Feb. 22, 2020 in a come-from-behind 56-50 win in Greenville, N.C.

LAST TIME THEY MET: ECU 56, Temple 50
> Despite a large first quarter lead, Temple fell to ECU, 56-50, at Minges Coliseum on Feb. 22.
> After Temple led 22-11 at the end of the first quarter, ECU outscored the Owls in the remaining three frames to earn the come-from-behind win. 
> The Owls held a slight edge on the boards, outrebounding ECU 38-37. 
> Temple also recorded a better field goal percentage than the Pirates (36.4% to 32.8%). But the Owls struggled from three-point range, shooting just 24% from beyond the arc (6-25). 
> The Pirates converted Temple's 19 turnovers into 14 points.
> Davis collected her 15th double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds. 
> Jones led Temple with 14 points and five assists. 
> Classmates Mackins and Williamson each notched six points. 
> Niang and rookie Asonah Alexander dished out four assists apiece.
