Millie Howard Earns All-America Honors
5.26.20 | Women's Track and Field
PHILADELPHIA – One of the most decorated student-athletes to ever wear Cherry and White, Temple track and field senior Millie Howard has officially earned All-America honors for the 2020 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field season, as announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday afternoon. Howard adds the accolade to her impressive senior year resume that includes the 2020 NCAA Elite 90 award, three All-Conference nods, Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area honors and two school records.
"This is an incredible honor for Millie in what has been a very special year for the track and field program," said assistant coach James Snyder. "She was our first student-athlete in program history to earn three all-conference honors in one championship meet, she established new school records in the mile and as the anchor leg of our DMR, and she went on to win the Elite-90 Award at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Adding her first All-American certificate to that list of accolades is the cherry on top and I cannot wait for her and the rest of our team to return to campus as we look to build off of these accomplishments next year."
Howard will go down in history as one of the best middle distance runners to ever spike up in Cherry and White. The North Yorkshire, England native earned All-Conference nods eight times throughout her illustrious career and currently holds three individual and five relay records. Last season, she earned All-AAC honors in all three events that she ran, individually finishing second in the mile and third in the 800m to help the Owls to their first-ever podium sweep in the event. She also anchored Temple's distance medley relay that shattered the conference record, clocking in at 11:14.87 to earn gold.
At the end of an outstanding indoor season, the senior punched her first-ever ticket to the National Championship meet after running a school-record mile time of 4:36.37 at the Boston Invitational. This time marked the fastest run by any American Athletic Conference female since the formation of the conference in 2013 and earned her a bib as an 11-seed out of 16 qualifiers in New Mexico. While the 2020 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships were canceled as a result of COVID-19, Howard left the meet with one of the most prestigious awards to culminate what it means to be a student-athlete when she became Temple's second-ever Elite 90 Award recipient. Howard is the 17th women's track and field All-American in Temple history and is the first Owl to earn the nods since Blanca Fernandez in 2016.
"While it was an unusual end to the season, I'm so glad Millie is getting recognized for her outstanding accomplishments," said head coach Elvis Forde. "I know she was so eager to compete at the national championship meet and while circumstances may have prevented that from happening, she earned the right to be there and is deserving of every accolade she received along the way. She is a true All-American and represented our program well every step of the way."
The cancellation of the NCAA Division I Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships led the Division I Track and Field Executive Committee, with the support of the USTFCCCA Board of Directors, to reconfigure the USTFCCCA All-America program for the 2020 indoor track and field season. All student-athletes listed on the post-medical scratch start list for the national championships have earned All-America recognition and there is no distinction of "first-team", "second-team" or "honorable mention" to these honors.
