Howard, Joyce Named to Academic All-District Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team

6.1.20 | Women's Cross Country, Women's Track and Field

PHILADELPHIA – Temple University's Millie Howard and Michelle Joyce were named to the 2020 Academic All-District Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Team, selected by CoSIDA. This award recognizes student-athletes for their combined excellence in competition and in the classroom.

For Howard, this award is one of many from her outstanding senior season. After running a program and conference record of 4:36.37 earlier in the season, she earned a bib as an 11th seed at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, reaching All-American honors for the first time in her career. At the AAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, the North Yorkshire, England native brought home a haul of medals, finishing All-Conference in three events. She anchored the DMR to gold and a conference record, in addition to finishing second in the mile and third in the 800. She also anchored Temple's distance medley relay team to a program record of 11:14.87 at the JDL DMR Invitational. It is the 8th record she has to her name. In cross country, Howard was a consistent scorer for the Owls all season. Her season highlight came at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, where she finished first for the Owls and 22nd overall, earning All-Region nods for the first time.

Howard's excellence is not exclusive to the track or course as the economics major maintains a 3.98 cumulative GPA. Howard was awarded the prestigious Elite 90 award, which is given to the student-athlete who has reached the highest level of competition at the national championships, while also holding the highest cumulative grade point average. At Temple Athletics' annual award ceremony, Howard received the award for both the Female Performer of the Year and the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year- the first Owl to ever receive both impressive honors. In addition, she was named to Temple's Trustee Ten Team and earned Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Honors.

Joyce was a major contributor for the Owls, both on the course and the track. In cross country, the junior was a consistent scorer for Temple all season, placing 15th overall at the American Athletic Conference Championships to earn All-Conference honors for the second year in a row. On the track, she had a breakthrough indoor season, dropping nine seconds off her 3000m personal best and 26 seconds off her 5000m personal best. At the American Indoor Track and Field Championships, Joyce placed 6th overall in the 5000m, earning All-Conference honors in the event for the first time.

In the classroom, Joyce has an impressive 3.99 cumulative GPA as a bioengineering major and was named to the Trustee Ten list for earning one of the top 10 GPAs in the athletics department. Joyce was also honored with Temple's Parliament Spirit Award for her commitment to sportsmanship and team leadership.

Both Joyce and Howard advance now to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. Academic All-America honorees will be announced from June 16-19.
