AAC Announces 2020 Preseason Football Media Poll

9.1.20 | Football

PHILADELPHIA - The American Athletic Conference has announced the 2020 football preseason media poll. Temple starts the season at eighth place overall in the conference.

The Owls enter the season after losing seven single-digit players to the NFL, three on the offense and four on the defense. Randle Jones, Branden Mack and new single-digit receiver Jadan Blue will lead the receiving corps now that Isaiah Wright is headed to the NFL. On the offensive line, the departures of Matt Hennessy and Jovahn Fair mean that starting positions are up in the air. Incoming graduate transfer C.J. Perez will challenge for the opening at center, while Vincent Picozzi returns from a season-ending injury. At the running back position, Maxwell Award nominee Re'Mahn Davis is coming off a successful freshman season, when he rushed for 936 yards and eight touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, Temple loses their trio of single-digit linebackers: Chapelle Russell, Sam Franklin, and Shaun Bradley to go along with the loss of Quincy Roche, who transferred to Miami (FL). Bednarik Award nominee Ifeanyi Maijeh, Isaiah Graham-Mobley, Daniel Archibong, and new single-digit players Christian Braswell and Amir Tyler will spearhead the unit that ranked seventh nationally in Red Zone Defense last season.

For the third straight season, UCF takes home the honor of AAC preseason favorite, receiving 204 points and 10 first-place votes. Narrowly edged by the Golden Knights are Luke Fickell's Cincinnati Bearcats who received 201 points and seven first-place votes.

Overall, four teams received first-place votes: UCF (10), Cincinnati (seven), Memphis (two), and Navy (one).

The Memphis Tigers, last season's champion, takes the bronze medal to start the year. The Tigers are led by Ryan Silverfield coming into 2020 who worked on Mike Norvell's coaching staff for the past four seasons.

USF is the only other team in the conference with a new man at the helm. Jeff Scott, Clemson's former co-offensive coordinator, takes over for Charlie Strong.

UConn's departure from the conference means that there are no longer East and West divisions. Instead, the remaining 11 teams are all grouped together with the top two teams facing off against each other at the end of the season. The date of the American Athletic Conference's championship game is still to be determined.

Last season's preseason media poll did not fare well with only one of the twelve teams finishing where they were "projected" to be.
