Ready Peddy: The Moment Temple Women’s Basketball Alum Has Been Waiting For

9.16.20 | Women's Basketball

BRADENTON, Fla. - The path to the WNBA was not an easy one for former Temple women's basketball standout Shey Peddy. The 2012 Atlantic-10 Conference Player of the Year played multiple seasons overseas before finally earning a spot on the Washington Mystics 2019 roster as a 30-year-old rookie.

Her rollercoaster journey continued as Peddy saw many highs and lows over the next two seasons. After winning the 2019 WNBA championship as a member of the Washington Mystics organization, Peddy entered the unprecedented 2020 WNBA season as a Mystic before she was released on August 17.

However, Peddy was able to remain in the "wubble" and continue to play as she signed with the three-time WNBA champions, the Phoenix Mercury, just two days later. Here, the second-year pro would play alongside some of the league's most notable players in Diana Taurasi, Skylar Diggins-Smith and Brianna Turner.

As the Mercury headed into the playoffs, they were set to play none other than the Washington Mystics in the first round on September 15.

The Mystics controlled the game up until the end of the third quarter, where they headed for the home-stretch with an 11-point lead. But the Mercury did not let off the gas.

Phoenix brought themselves within two points with 5.8 seconds remaining as they were powered by Taurasi and Diggin-Smith's combined 47 points. But neither All-Star would have the ball in their hands for the final shot of the game.

It was Peddy, the player who has been cut three times in WNBA training camps, who took the hail-mary three-pointer from the corner as time expired.

All the hard work had finally paid off.

Peddy hit the trey to send the Mercury to the second round of the playoffs and knock out her former team.

"It's the best feeling I've felt, probably ever. That was a dream-come-true shot right there," Peddy said of her game-winning bucket. "It's like a fairy tale moment."

The Roxbury, Mass. native finished the game as one of four Phoenix players to notch double-digits with her 12-point effort. She added four rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist in the 85-84 victory.

Peddy and the Mercury will take on the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in round two of the playoffs. The game will be aired on ESPN2.
