Gymnastics Shines on Floor in 2021 Debut

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple gymnastics team had a nervy first meet of the 2021 season, but finished strong, tallying a team score of 192.400 to finish third at the Ken Anderson Invitational. Eastern Michigan won the meet with a 194.30 while Towson took second scoring 193.925.

> Temple competed in its first meet as a member of the Eastern Athletic Gymnastics League (EAGL)
> The Owls' floor score tied for highest event score of the night, as the team combined for a 48.950.
> Four freshmen and a pair of transfers earned lineup spots, to make their debuts in Cherry & White.
> Freshman Renee Schugman competed the All-Around, the only athlete to do so in the meet.
> Temple had four podium finishes, led by a pair from junior transfer Julianna Roland (3rd - VT; 2nd - BB).Â
> Senior Faith Leary won the floor title with a 9.9, while classmate Tori Edwards was second on the event.
Vault
> Temple led off the meet on vault, scoring a solid 48.650. The Owls had five scores above 9.7, anchored by a beautiful vault from Roland.Â
> Junior transfer Caitlin Gray and Edwards each tallied 9.725's.
> Junior Ariana Castrence and freshman Mackenzie Aresta scored matching 9.7's in the rotation, while Schugman had a 9.650.
Bars
> A shaky bars rotation put Temple behind the pack, as the Owls scored just a 47.475.Â
> Highlighting the rotation was a career-best 9.725 routine from junior Nichole Smith.
> Gray notched a 9.650, while Edwards added a 9.60.
Beam
> The Owls combined for a 47.325 beam rotation, having to count a pair of falls.
> Shining on the event was Roland, who tallied a team-best 9.8, while senior Jordyn Oster led off with a 9.650.
Floor
> Temple finished with their best rotation of the night, scoring a 48.950, the best event score for any team at the meet.
> Leary dazzled with a career-best 9.9 to win floor, while classmate Tori Edwards finished second overall with a 9.850 in the leadoff spot.
> Roland wrapped up her outstanding Temple debut with a 9.775 on the event, while Schugman (9.750) and rookie Brooke Donabedian (9.675) impressed in their first collegiate floor routines.Â
