Gymnastics Travels to Towson for Tri-Meet

1.20.21 | Women's Gymnastics

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple gymnastics team hits the road on Friday for the Owls' first away meet of the season. The Cherry & White will travel to new EAGL rival, Towson, to compete in SECU Arena, alongside another new conference foe in NC State.

NEW ERA
Temple began a new era on January 16, opening competition as a member of the EAGL for the first time in program history. The Owls spent 14 seasons in the ECAC, coming away with two titles, before making the leap to the EAGL this year. Temple joins Long Island University, another newcomer to the conference (and the NCAA!), to set the EAGL total to eight teams. NC State, Pitt, GWU, UNH, UNC, and Towson round out the league.

LAST TIME OUT
Temple took third in their home tri-meet, the Ken Anderson Invitational, scoring a 192.400. The Owls had a rough outing on bars and beam, but had a solid vault rotation and ended with a strong floor score. Four freshmen and a pair of transfers earned lineup spots, to make their debuts in Cherry & White, with rookie Renee Schugman competing in the All-Around, the only athlete to do so in the meet.

Temple had four podium finishes, led by a pair from junior transfer Julianna Roland (3rd - VT; 2nd - BB). Senior Faith Leary won the floor title with a 9.9, while classmate Tori Edwards was second on the event. Leary was named EAGL Co-Specialist of the Week on Tuesday for her efforts.

SCOUTING TOWSON
Towson returns to the mat after a 48th place NQS last season. The Tigers best event a year ago was also beam, where they ranked 46th in the nation with an RQS of 48.715. Towson ranked sixth in the EAGL at the end of the 2020 season and return All-Conference performers on three events. Emerson Hurst was an All-EAGL beamer last season with an NQS of 9.815, while Camille Vitoff (All-EAGL vault) and Tess Zientek (All-EAGL bars) also return for the Tigers.

LAST MEET FOR TOWSON
The Tigers finished second overall at the Ken Anderson Invitational at Temple, scoring a 193.925, which marked their highest season opening score in program history. The Tigers tied for the highest event score of the night with a 48.950 on floor. Towson's Allison Zuhlke earned a weekly award from the EAGL, being named Co-Rookie of the Week after putting up two 9.7 scores.

NC STATE
NC State is poised to follow a 2020 season that saw the team claim a share of the first-ever EAGL Regular-Season Championship. The Wolfpack posted five scores above 196 a year ago, including a season-best 196.550 against Minnesota on Senior Day. Individually, Wolfpack gymnasts combined for 19 All-EAGL honors last year, with six of those honorees returning for 2021.

LAST MEET FOR NC STATE
NC State topped Pitt, 194.925 to 192.850 on Saturday to open the season. The Wolfpack had a 49.025 bars rotation, their best score of the night. Winning event titles for the Wolfpack were Chloe Negrete (VT - 9.825), Meredith Robinson (UB - 9.875), Emily Shepard (FX - 9.850), and Shepard (AA - 39.225). Shepard was honored as the EAGL Gymnast of the Week, while  Carina Jordan earned Co-Rookie of the Week honors.
