Burlington, N.C. – Sophomore Graham Chase had the best day of his three-year collegiate career, shooting a four-under 138 to lead Temple Golf to a three-way tie for fifth place at the 13-team Phoenix Invitational Monday. As a team, the Owls are three-under par over the first two rounds at the 6,867-yard, par-71 Alamance Country Club with the final 18 holes commencing Tuesday morning.
Recapping the Day
> Chase shot a career-best three-under 68 for his morning round, making six bridies with three among his first six holes and two over his final four of the round. He was the only Owl under par over the opening 18 holes as the team was three-over and in the ninth place at the break.
> Chase continued his stellar play in the afternoon, making two more birdies to finish with a one-under 70. He is tied for eighth overall after 36 holes.
> True freshman Ethan Whitney was next for Temple with a one-under 141 to tie for 24th overall. Whitney was one-over (72) in the morning before shooting a two-under 69 for his afternoon round courtesy of four birdies.
> Conor McGrath, who was named American Athletic Conference Co-Golfer of the Month earlier in the week, rebounded from a three-over 74 to shoot a two-under 69 in the afternoon to tie for 34th with a one-over 143. The AAC Co-Golfer of the Month made five birdies in his second round.
> Dawson Anders, like McGrath, shot a 74 in the morning and followed his co-captain with a one-under 70 in the afternoon to tie for 41st with a two-over 144.
> The team's other starter, Joey Morganti, scored in the opening round with a two-over 73, but struggled in the afternoon with a seven-over 78 to tie for 68th with a nine-over 151. Morganti was involved in a little history as he was in the foursome of former NBA player JR Smith, who made his collegiate golfing debut as a member of the North Carolina A&T team.

On the day
"We are disappointed in how we played today. We just didn't have it. We had a great week of practice this week, played really well. Today unfortunately we just did not play that well and hopefully tomorrow we go out and play the way we are capable of playing."
On JR Smith Collegiate Debut
"It was great to see, good for the game and promotes collegiate golf. He is a first-class guy and nice to Joey and the other golfers. He just wanted to fit in and play good golf."
