Battle’s Season High 29 Points Leads Men’s Basketball Past Delaware

11.27.21 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Khalif Battle scored 29 points, including 20 in the second half, to propel Temple to a 75-74 win over visiting Delaware Saturday night at the Liacouras Center.  The Owls overcame an 11-point second half deficit to even their record at 3-3 on the season.  Delaware dropped to 4-3.

Recapping the Game

First Half
> Temple jumped out to an early 13-7 lead with Jake Forrester (4 pts) and Khalif Battle (5 pts) leading the way.
> Delaware then ran off 10 unanswered points over two-minute stretch to take a 17-13 lead with just under 12 minutes on the clock.
> A Jahlil White baseline drive for a layup broke the Owls drought, and a Nick Jourdain finish from a nice pass from Damian Dunn tied the contest.
> The teams traded baskets until the Blue Hens went on another 10-0 run at the four-minute mark to take a 35-26 lead on a Jameer Nelson, Jr. jumper with 1:17 on the clock.
> The Owls closed strong, with a Tai Strickland jumper and three free throws from Battle with1.1 seconds remaining in the period to cut the deficit to 35-31 at intermission.

Second Half
> Delaware quickly extended its lead to double figures, scoring 11 of the first 15 points of the half, to take a 46-35 lead at the 16:45 mark.
> Temple finally got on a run of its own, scoring eight straight over a three-minute stretch to retake the lead, 56-55, on a Jourdain basket.
> The lead changed hands until Nelson, Jr. and Kevin Anderson drained consecutive threes to give the Blue Hens 65-60 advantage with 4:46 to play.
> The Owls scored the next six, four by Battle, to regain the lead, 66-65, with 2:43 to play.
> A Dylan Painter layup put UD back on top but Battle again answered with a three-pointer and a fastbreak dunk off a feed from Dunn to lift Temple to a 71-67 lead with just under a minute to play.
> A Painter dunk cut the margin to a basket, then chaos ensued as Jeremiah Williams was fouled at midcourt and then connected with a forearm to a Delaware player.  Williams, who was called for a flagrant foul, made his two free throws, but so did Anderson for Delaware.
> After Ryan Allen missed a shot, Tai Strickland was fouled and converted both free throws to give Temple a 75-71 advantage.
> Anderson drained a three-pointer with 5.7 seconds to play to cut it to one, but Temple would hold on for the win as Nelson, Jr.'s desperation three at the buzzer missed the mark.

Statistically Speaking
> Anderson led the Blue Hens with 26 points while Painter added 21.   Nelson, Jr. had a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
> Dunn (13) and Williams (11) joined Battle in double figures for the Owls.
> Temple had just nine turnovers for the game and none in the second half.
> Arashma Parks saw his first action of the season for Temple, playing seven minutes with a rebound and a steal.
