Volleyball Takes on Delaware, Towson this Weekend

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team takes a break from American Athletic Conference play, hosting a pair of non-conference opponents this weekend. The Owls will take on Delaware on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and Towson on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Both matches will be carried on ESPN+ live from McGonigle Hall.
OWL ABOUT TEMPLE
Temple is 5-3 on the season with a 1-3 mark in conference play. Temple is coming off an 0-2 weekend against league-favorite, UCF, who is receiving votes in the national poll. Temple hung with the Knights on Thursday, with three sets being decided by just seven total points, while the Knights won a more lopsided match on Saturday. The Owls are fifth in the conference, hitting .207 as a team, while opponents hit .193 against them.
Individually, junior Miray Bolukbasi leads the Owls' offense with 3.90 kills per set, while classmate Gem Grimshaw averages 3.71. Junior Tyler Lindgren runs the offense, dishing out 9.83 assists per set. Freshman Falanika Danielson averages a conference-best 5.80 digs per frame, while classmate Taylor Davenport leads Temple with 31 total blocks.

Temple fell in three sets to UCF on Friday night, dropping the match 25-19, 25-12, 25-16. Temple struggled with serve-receive, keeping the offense out of system throughout the match, as the Owls were held to just a .060 attack. Falanika Danielson led all players with 16 digs, while Taylor Davenport had four blocks. Offensively, Miray Bolukbasi had nine kills while classmate Gem Grimshaw had seven kills. Tyler Lindgren added 21 assists in the loss.
SCOUTING DELAWARE
Delaware is 1-1 on the season heading into Friday's match. The Blue Hens split matches with James Madison in their only action this season. Delaware finished sixth in the CAA last season, advancing to the conference tournament semifinals. Three starters from that 2019 team return in setter Ezgi Basaranlar, outside hitter Lani Mason and middle blocker Adelina Rivera.
Through two matches, Michaela Putnicki leads the Mud Hens with 3.79 kills per set, while Rivera is right behind, averaging 3.36. Basaranlar has dished out 8.71 assists per set, while the team is hitting .154. Defensively, Katie Turner has averaged 2.57 digs per set, while Basaranlar and Rivera have each tallied nine total blocks.

Temple is 17-11 all-time against Delaware, with the series kicking off in 1984 with a 3-2 Temple win. The Owls have lost two straight in the series, but the teams haven't played since 2011.

Towson is 1-0 to start the season after a win at Stony Brook on Saturday. The Tigers are coming off a 2019 season that saw them win the CAA Championship and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers grabbed a set from #11 Penn State in that second round match-up but ultimately fell, 3-1. Returning from the 2019 team are reiging CAA Rookie of the Year, middle Lydia Wiers and All-CAA pick, outside hitter Emily Jarome.
In Towson's first match of the 2021 season, Jarome posted a double-double with a match-best 13 kills and 10 digs, while Lydia Wiers hit .538 with nine kills on 13 swings with three blocks. Kristin Spengler had 34 assists, while Asia Goins had 12 digs to lead the team.

Temple is 4-1 all-time against the Tigers, with the last match-up between the teams coming in 2005. Temple has won two straight in the series, which dates back to 1985.

Freshman Falanika Danielson was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. Danielson continued to shine for the Owls defensively, leading both teams in digs for the fifth and sixth-straight matches. She averaged 7.17 digs per set in a pair matches against league-leading UCF. On Thursday, the libero amassed 27 digs, besting the next closest player on both teams by 14. Danielson also had an ace and five assists. On Friday, she picked up a match-high 16 digs while adding three aces.
